Queen Camilla has been using jewelry subtly as a measure of diplomacy<\/a> this week, a trend she continued right through the last day of the U.S. state visit. This morning, the King and Queen stopped for a formal farewell at the White House with President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Pinned to her royal blue dress, the Queen wore a vintage brooch\u2014but one that was new to her collection, as it was given to her by the Trumps last fall.<\/p>\n

The formal exchange of gifts on state visits is an old tradition. When the President and First Lady visited the United Kingdom last year for Trump\u2019s unprecedented second state visit to the country<\/a>, they brought for the Queen a vintage, 18-karat gold, diamond and ruby brooch made by Tiffany & Co., with a floral-inspired design. The piece is estimated to be worth more than \u00a330,000 ($41,000).<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time Queen Camilla has worn the brooch. In fact, she wore it during the U.S. state visit to the UK in September<\/a>. The Queen had been wearing the Russian Sapphire Cluster Brooch upon the President and First Lady\u2019s arrival at Windsor Castle, but she was photographed later the same day already wearing the new bauble. Maxwell Stone, the creative director of British-based jewelers Steven Stone, told Hello<\/a> at the time, \u201cWearing the brooch so shortly after receiving it was a thoughtful gesture by Queen Camilla, signaling her gratitude and respect for the gift.\u201d<\/p>\n

Both couples exchanged gifts again this week<\/a>, and Camilla received another robin\u2019s egg blue box from Tiffany & Co., this time filled with six silver teaspoons engraved with her royal monogram. In turn, she gave the First Lady a brooch by British jewelry designer Fiona Rae.<\/p>\n

King Charles, meanwhile, presented President Trump with a framed reproduction of the 1879 design plans for the Resolute Desk, the originals of which are held by the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. Trump gave the King a framed copy of a 1785 letter written by John Adams, then serving as U.S. ambassador to Britain, to Secretary of Foreign Affairs John Jay, describing Adams’s emotionally charged meeting with King George III and the two nations\u2019 agreement to pursue amicable relations.<\/p>\n
