{"id":18895,"date":"2026-05-22T02:45:37","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T02:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/18895\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T02:45:37","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T02:45:37","slug":"italy-investigates-sephora-benefit-over-skincare-marketing-to-kids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/18895\/","title":{"rendered":"Italy investigates Sephora, Benefit over skincare marketing to kids"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A view of a Sephora beauty product store on May 30, 2025 in Sherman Oaks, California. <\/p>\n<p>Justin Sullivan | Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Italian regulators are looking to clamp down on the tween skincare obsession and are investigating the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/MC-FR\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">LVMH<\/a>-owned cosmetic brands Sephora and Benefit over an &#8220;insidious&#8221; marketing campaign to children. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.agcm.it\/en\/media\/press-releases\/2026\/3\/PS13110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Italian Competition Authority<\/a> (AGCM) said Friday that it has launched investigations into the two cosmetic brands centred on &#8220;unfair commercial practices,&#8221; which saw children and young people, even those under the age of 10, being encouraged to purchase serums, masks, and anti-ageing creams.  <\/p>\n<p>The regulator said the marketing is fuelling behavior known as &#8220;cosmeticorexia,&#8221; which refers to an unhealthy fixation on skincare amongst minors. <\/p>\n<p>It emphasized that both Sephora and Benefit had failed to appropriately label products or omitted at times important precautions on products not intended for use by minors, both in-store and online on social media, which could cause serious harm to their health. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, AGCM said the popular cosmetic brands employed an &#8220;insidious marketing strategy&#8221; which involved young micro-influencers promoting other young people to buy their products. <\/p>\n<p>AGCM officials and the Italian financial police carried out inspections of the premises of Sephora Italia, LVMH Profumi e Cosmetici Italia, and LVMH Italia on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/09\/gen-alpha-kids-to-fuel-holiday-skincare-spending.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/107330393-1699388427779-Gen_Alphas_obsession_wiht_skincare-_V3.jpg\"\/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/11\/09\/gen-alpha-kids-to-fuel-holiday-skincare-spending.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Barbie who? Gen Alpha kids &#8216;obsessed&#8217; with skin care could fuel holiday spending<\/a><\/p>\n<p>LVMH said Sephora, Benefit, and LVMH P&amp;C Italy had been notified of the investigation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As the investigation is ongoing, Sephora, Benefit and LVMH P&amp;C Italy cannot share further comments at this stage, they express their willingness to fully cooperate with the authorities,&#8221; LVMH said in a statement to CNBC. &#8220;All the companies reaffirm their strict compliance with applicable Italian regulations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Sephora boasts nearly 23 million followers on Instagram and over 2 million followers on TikTok, with the beauty brand at the center of tween beauty trends. <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/search?q=Sephora%20kids&amp;t=1774619535648\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8220;Sephora kids&#8221; social media trend<\/a> has gained traction over the past few years, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@emma_droog\/video\/7331512673668025642?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7604753056711214614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">viral videos<\/a> on TikTok and Instagram showing stores flooded with teenage girls loading up their baskets with brightly-coloured and fun-looking skincare products. <\/p>\n<p>In some videos, young girls show off their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@itsdelaneyelizabeth\/video\/7385196269792234798?is_from_webapp=1&amp;sender_device=pc&amp;web_id=7604753056711214614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">skincare routines<\/a> with products containing anti-ageing ingredients like retinol. <\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/skincare-industry-products-tweens-harm-young-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS News analysis<\/a> of 240 skincare posts from teen influencers on TikTok found that many of the videos hadn&#8217;t been properly tagged as promotional content, with only 15 videos, or just 6% of posts, doing so. This means many content creators may unintentionally be advertising products to unsuspecting children.   <\/p>\n<p>One teen skincare influencer, Embreigh Courtlyn, told CBS that some brands would ask her not to label videos with &#8220;#ad,&#8221; which could be off-putting to viewers, but instead be referred to as partners, which would enable the content to perform better. <\/p>\n<p>A peer-reviewed study published by <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article-abstract\/156\/1\/e2024070309\/202103\/Pediatric-Skin-Care-Regimens-on-TikTok\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Northwestern University in June<\/a> last year reviewed 100 popular skincare videos posted by influencers aged 7 to 18 years old. It found that only a quarter of the videos included sunscreen, while the top 25 most viewed videos had an average of 11 and a maximum of 21 potentially irritating active ingredients. <\/p>\n<p><a id=\"headline0\"\/>Social media bans<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/108282664-17744289501774428948-44799582341-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"Tracking Europe's approach to social media bans for teenagers\"\/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/META\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Meta<\/a>, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, faced two stinging defeats in court cases centered on social media harms this week. Meta was found liable by a New Mexico jury on Tuesday for nearly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/24\/jury-reaches-verdict-in-meta-child-safety-trial-in-new-mexico.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$400 million in damages<\/a>\u00a0after it concluded that it failed to protect children on its platforms from predators.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/02\/18\/meta-mark-zuckerberg-social-media-safety-trial.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">A separate trial in Los Angeles<\/a> found Meta and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/GOOGL\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s<\/a> YouTube negligent on Wednesday, and said the companies failed to warn users of the dangers associated with using those platforms, in a case brought by a plaintiff who said addictive use of Instagram and YouTube resulted in her developing body dysmorphia.
