It left <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/01\/10\/why-has-majid-al-futtaim-closed-its-carrefour-stores-in-oman-and-jordan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2025\/01\/10\/why-has-majid-al-futtaim-closed-its-carrefour-stores-in-oman-and-jordan\/\">Oman in January and Jordan in November<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-4-7SRSGDEF7VBHREWCAIQ4OCM7IQ\">Its regional franchise operator, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/05\/25\/majid-al-futtaim-raises-500m-through-green-sukuk-issuance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/economy\/2023\/05\/25\/majid-al-futtaim-raises-500m-through-green-sukuk-issuance\/\">Dubai-based Majid Al Futtaim<\/a>, has introduced grocery brand HyperMax across the sites Carrefour closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-6-7KXYURR745GLNB7ATHMAIXSDXI\">Majid Al Futtaim told The National: \u201cAt present, there are no immediate plans to expand HyperMax across other markets.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-7-QW45FGGSQBHA5BCY73DP2WNJEE\">The company continuously reviews its businesses \u201cto stay agile and responsive to evolving market dynamics\u201d, it added. \u201cIn response to a growing demand for locally sourced products and services in a number of our markets, Majid Al Futtaim has launched HyperMax \u2013 an independently owned and operated grocery retailing brand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-9-7KZVON5S7ZHMXL3XZWP24CF5A4\">Majid Al Futtaim also said that HyperMax\u2019s aim is to bring \u201cfresh and affordable locally-sourced products\u201d to its customers in Jordan, Oman, Bahrain and Kuwait. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-10-R6IMNQAL3JBJFAHPCRVLOROUUA\">\u201cCarrefour has not been doing well in the region, given strong competition from players such as Lulu who have expanded strategically recently,\u201d said Rabia Yasmeen, global insights manager for e-commerce at data analytics company Euromonitor International.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-12-EL3R7OMKYRCV5IZGEU3YAI4SNU\">While there could be other factors such as shifts towards e-commerce and discounted options, the markets for these are small in countries like Oman and Bahrain, she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-13-WAEOSW2FLJBN3A2G5SD7S7CY34\">\u201cIt seems they are making these decisions considering financial profitability and contribution of these markets to their sales in the region,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-14-4WV7ZEUGMZFVLMIHJZ6IZN4X7U\">Majid Al Futtaim\u2019s shift to HyperMax in Oman, Jordan, and Bahrain probably reflects a desire for greater autonomy in branding and operations, said John Katsos, visiting lecturer at Cork University business school and a professor at the American University of Sharjah. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-15-O7NNOE6XIBFDJIA2QM3ZBXRYC4\">\u201cIt also comes at a moment when some western brands face consumer boycotts linked to political issues, including solidarity with Palestine. By moving towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/2023\/04\/03\/carrefour-launches-new-training-programme-for-emiratis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/uae\/2023\/04\/03\/carrefour-launches-new-training-programme-for-emiratis\/\">a home-grown brand<\/a>, Majid Al Futtaim can insulate itself from these pressures while tailoring more directly to regional consumers,\u201d Dr Katsos said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-16-MOR6BPTZFFHCRLKMKQNPYHX5UM\">The Carrefour brand has come under pressure from the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement over its partnership with retailers that operate within illegal Israeli settlements. The issue has gained greater attention during Israel&#8217;s war on Gaza and its atrocities in the occupied territories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-17-TJMR4NI6XFAAZNLGD4XMYLWVN4\">The movement claimed that Carrefour&#8217;s decision to leave Jordan was largely a result of its global campaign to boycott the brand, which began in December 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Long partnership <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-19-A2QYTH5Z2RBJ3EQLYTOJJC5OUY\">Majid Al Futtaim, the Middle East&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/property\/2025\/04\/16\/dubais-mall-of-the-emirates-to-undergo-136bn-makeover-to-mark-20th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">largest mall operator<\/a>, brought Carrefour to the region in 1995. In May 2013, the company also bought a 25 per cent minority stake from Carrefour Group in its hypermarket business for \u20ac530 million. At the same time, the Dubai company extended its exclusive franchise partnership with Carrefour until 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-20-KK424IVH3FBG5GXFMY5SHNVDTA\">Carrefour said in April that it had renewed its franchise agreement with Majid Al Futtaim, with the deal including more than 400 shops in 20 countries, covering the Middle East, Egypt, East Africa and Georgia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-22-BMK224DP6ZHGZBXFM2Z6N535IA\">The group said at the time that it intended to open 10 more markets, mainly in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, as part of its strategic plan Carrefour 2026. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-23-P5NJHWWQQBHZBLFBOUL44UBHRA\">Majid Al Futtaim currently holds the exclusive rights to operate Carrefour across 12 markets in the Middle East, Africa and Asia, with a network of more than 390 shops, according to its website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-24-NEKDX72YTFE6ZEIO5LTZSFLYY4\">Carrefour continues to be a strong global brand and Majid Al Futtaim has also spent \u201csignificant energy\u201d in localising, with even the regional logo different from the parent company, said Sandeep Ganediwalla, partner in Middle East for Redseer Strategy Consultants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-25-2TOFAVAXAVFQJI3CP3F7NCIAOE\">\u201cIt is a multi-decade strategic partnership, so any change would not have been knee-jerk and will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/magazine\/2025\/09\/14\/kate-hardcastle-consumer-behaviour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/magazine\/2025\/09\/14\/kate-hardcastle-consumer-behaviour\/\">driven by consumer needs<\/a>,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-26-QYYA2SEZBRCNRBSZ6P7DUMMMWM\">But for any strategic partnership to work, the benefits derived should be greater than the cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-27-KENPLFHGKVFMLE2I2BKRSMNJYQ\">\u201cLocal consumer cultural sensitivities have evolved significantly over the last few years with customers preferring local brands over international ones on many occasions. At the same time, Majid Al Futtaim has developed strong executional muscle for the grocery business, not just in offline channels but also has been innovating on their online channel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-28-K3C4K7XMORDHDEFANQKSL2OULU\">Majid Al Futtaim is currently growing the portfolio of its HyperMax shops, with six more locations announced in Bahrain, adding to 44 in Jordan and Oman. The plan with HyperMax is to support local supply chains, it said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-29-FUYKJE3DGJHCDIRSGFQJV2FSQY\">Majid Al Futtaim also operates Supeco, a low-cost hybrid grocery retail model that combines a traditional supermarket with a wholesale warehouse, across 17 sites in Egypt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-30-QOCCEO4NONDJRFV3LAKWUL6Z5E\">\u201cIt&#8217;s important to remember that Majid Al Futtaim was the regional franchisee of Carrefour \u2013 so closure of Carrefour stores is not equal to Majid Al Futtaim exiting grocery retail in these markets,\u201d said Ms Yasmeen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-31-PGDZHENTKFBGDEKH4IB6S2CZF4\">\u201cHyperMax appears to be just a rebrand under the local Majid Al Futtaim management of these [Carrefour] stores.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Will the UAE be next?<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-33-SEQEW5PJURGADFANWMHRN7B3NM\">Neither Majid Al Futtaim nor Carrefour have revealed future plans for other shops in the region. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-34-HITT6LWNENDF3GYKS2RFWOVBL4\">But according to Dr Katsos, since Carrefour is a \u201cflagship brand with deep roots\u201d in the UAE, an \u201cimmediate replacement seems unlikely\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-35-MFDV5CAQHNCLFHAG242F6BVMEQ\">\u201cThe UAE retail market is one of the most competitive in the region, and long-standing brands like Carrefour have built strong trust with consumers. Replacing such a brand always carries risks, particularly in a market as global and brand-conscious as the UAE,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-37-WX23TMXEVJDFFDT6HFMA7CTGJ4\">\u201cA more probable scenario is a dual-brand strategy \u2013 maintaining Carrefour while growing HyperMax \u2013 so Majid Al Futtaim can capture the benefits of both global recognition and local independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-38-QTPWZAKG3FCTDL2GJAHN6SQXRU\">The fact that Majid Al Futtaim was only rebranding in select markets shows it is a considered exercise, added Mr Ganediwalla.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-39-DMKTAWGL7NA6HN2QGUEEEJEVVQ\">\u201cAny new market such as the UAE, which is larger, will go through similar decision making,\u201d he said. \u201cHaving said that, such rebranding is not without precedence \u2026 Majid Al Futtaim successfully localised its cinemas business in 2011 \u2013 it rebranded the Cinestar Cinemas chain to its own Vox Cinemas concept.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Changing market <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-41-YXPDKXPCUNHCFCRQZB5USZBRHM\">The retail sector across the Middle East and North Africa is expanding, especially in the Gulf, where sales are projected to grow at 4.6 per cent annually to reach $386.9 billion in 2028, from $309.6 billion in 2023, Alpen Capital said in a report last year.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" type=\"image\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/https:\/\/cdn.jwplayer.com\/v2\/media\/hRDaywXS\/poster.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"225\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Carrefour shuts Bahrain stores as HyperMax takes over<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-43-Y45OAUZ3Y5DMLFZOHCIII5CFCU\">The growth is expected to be supported by an increase in population, rise in per capita income and boost in tourism activities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-44-45UOY5WENRD2XISOHYPSVOSQYU\">The retail value of the UAE market alone, excluding sales tax, grew 4.1 per cent annually to reach $62.4 billion last year, according to data from Euromonitor. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-45-7YZRATC2WBGLJK5TJDT5L6FXBU\">\u201cWe are seeing a clear shift in consumer behaviour across the region, particularly among its large working-age population, towards healthier, organic and locally grown food in the years following the pandemic,\u201d said Sameena Ahmad, managing director at Alpen Capital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-46-P5CZELPOGJEZDLZNX7OE6YWDQU\">However, cost and convenience have also become decisive factors in choosing a primary grocery retailer, reflecting both inflationary pressures and changing lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-47-ZL5PEQ6NARG23DFIPYXIQFKKEY\">\u201cThis shift is reinforced by the rapid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/technology\/gcc-food-delivery-apps-tap-insatiable-appetite-1.908710\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/technology\/gcc-food-delivery-apps-tap-insatiable-appetite-1.908710\">growth of online food delivery<\/a>, quick-commerce platforms and cloud kitchens, with apps such as Amazon, Careem, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/2025\/09\/15\/talabat-resumes-services-in-qatar-after-it-was-suspended-last-week-for-misleading-consumers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/2025\/09\/15\/talabat-resumes-services-in-qatar-after-it-was-suspended-last-week-for-misleading-consumers\/\">Talabat <\/a>setting new benchmarks for speed and accessibility,\u201d Ms Ahmad said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-48-YZXCRG44ZNAODJT4AZFSU2XETM\">\u201cWhile this trend has raised questions about the future of physical stores, bricks-and-mortar outlets remain relevant, though their role is evolving into experiential spaces that complement digital convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-49-CBR44FLK3JHFXGFEQ5D5PNFPD4\">For customers, everything is a consideration these days \u2013 value in terms of price and quality, convenience and variety, according to Ms Yasmeen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"defaultstyled__StyledText-sc-11u52t4-1 huqwQJ margin-lg-bottom\" id=\"el-50-RYLYEYGRRBDFTMQNQMZI2TFKD4\">\u201cThird-party apps are converging these factors on one platform \u2013 giving consumer the choice, convenience and also value with the promotion offers or subscription services.
