PARIS\u2014 France<\/a> will independently finance the Rafale F5 fighter jet program after the United Arab Emirates withdrew from a proposed cost-sharing arrangement.<\/p>\n

The breakdown follows a tense diplomatic exchange between French President Emmanuel Macron and UAE leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed over technology-sharing terms.<\/p>\n

Abu Dhabi\u2019s participation was contingent on meaningful involvement in the aircraft\u2019s development, particularly in advanced optronics technology. Despite this increase, defense sources describe the funding approach as \u201cspreading the jam on toast,\u201d meaning costs are distributed across a longer timeline to compensate for budget shortfalls. Rafale F5 deliveries will face delays as a direct result. The loss of Emirati funding also weakens France\u2019s ability to manage other programmatic commitments, including SCAF, Eurodrone, and broader cooperative defense initiatives outlined in the 2024\u20132030 LPM.<\/p>\n

The two countries are separated by just 55 km at the Strait of Hormuz, making the threat from Iran immediate and constant. France\u2019s tangible military support, in contrast to the limited engagement from many European partners, has rebuilt trust between Paris and Abu Dhabi.<\/p>\n
