{"id":23401,"date":"2026-05-25T06:51:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-25T06:51:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/23401\/"},"modified":"2026-05-25T06:51:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-25T06:51:08","slug":"qantas-project-sunrise-hit-with-delay-airbus-says-supply-chain-to-blame","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/23401\/","title":{"rendered":"Qantas Project Sunrise hit with delay, Airbus says supply chain to blame"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Project Sunrise aimed to make direct flights from Sydney to London and New York a reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Airbus said the first A350-1000ULR for delivery to Qantas had entered the paint shop in Toulouse, France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cOver the next two weeks the aircraft will be painted with the airline\u2019s full livery before work begins on the completion of the premium four-class layout and installation of engines.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/airlines\/future-of-flying-ultra-long-haul-routes-robots-and-cleaner-jets-by-2050\/premium\/IWSHEMKVY5FYNHISVIOOMH726E\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/airlines\/future-of-flying-ultra-long-haul-routes-robots-and-cleaner-jets-by-2050\/premium\/IWSHEMKVY5FYNHISVIOOMH726E\/\">The ultra-long-haul aircraft<\/a> will have a high proportion of first-class, business and premium economy seats, and 140 in economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">In total, cabins will have 238 seats, the lowest seat count of any A350-1000 in service.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">That\u2019s largely a reflection of how the huge amount of fuel required for the long journey impacts route economics.<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"Qantas' new A350-1000ULR at the Airbus manufacturing facility in Toulouse, France.\" class=\"article-media__image responsively-lazy\" data-test-ui=\"article-media__image\"\/>Qantas&#8217; new A350-1000ULR at the Airbus manufacturing facility in Toulouse, France.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Airbus said: \u201cPreparations for the test aircraft\u2019s first flight are also at an advanced stage, with it ready to take to the skies in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThis will mark the start of a two-month flight test programme focused primarily on the modified fuel system, which will enable non-stop flights of up to 22 hours.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Qantas ordered 12 of the A350-1000ULRs in May 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWhen these services take off, passengers will save up to four hours off the journey,\u201d a Qantas spokesperson told the Herald today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cThree aircraft are needed to run a daily non-stop service on either route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cPilot training is well underway at our new A350 simulator in Sydney, and next month we\u2019ll announce the first route and timing of our inaugural commercial services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Qantas said while the first aircraft delivery had shifted to April 2027, the next four deliveries should follow in quick succession.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">That would put Project Sunrise on its original schedule by November, the Australian airline said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe continue to work closely with Airbus on the delivery and certification process that will enable us to begin operating these history-making ultra-long-haul flights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img  alt=\"The new ultra-long-haul or ultra-long-range (ULR) widebody at the Airbus factory in Toulouse. Photo \/ Supplied<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">In 2024, the European Union Aviation Safety Agency asked Airbus to redesign an extra fuel tank.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Delivery dates were then pushed back by about six months to mid-2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Reuters at the time reported that global aviation regulators were more closely scrutinising aircraft variant design changes after two deadly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/boeing-737-max-crashes-us-judge-sets-trial-date\/R6OMU24WFNFA3GB7TLOIUDLVKU\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/boeing-737-max-crashes-us-judge-sets-trial-date\/R6OMU24WFNFA3GB7TLOIUDLVKU\/\">Boeing 737 MAX crashes<\/a> in 2018 and 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Qantas in April this year said there was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/airlines\/iran-blockade-qantas-outlines-fare-hikes-route-changes-cuts-after-fuel-price-shock\/premium\/UWSWNLATBBDCXB67HN37UXE54Y\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/companies\/airlines\/iran-blockade-qantas-outlines-fare-hikes-route-changes-cuts-after-fuel-price-shock\/premium\/UWSWNLATBBDCXB67HN37UXE54Y\/\">strong demand for flights to Europe<\/a> and it was ramping up services to Paris and Rome but cutting domestic services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Qantas international and freight chief executive Cam Wallace discussed the project with the Herald <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/qantas-ceo-cam-wallace-on-air-nz-rivalry-government-funding-fleet-renewal-samoas-potential\/premium\/EN3M4BP2QNBU7I7S3YWVX62AXA\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/business\/qantas-ceo-cam-wallace-on-air-nz-rivalry-government-funding-fleet-renewal-samoas-potential\/premium\/EN3M4BP2QNBU7I7S3YWVX62AXA\/\" target=\"_blank\">when he visited Auckland in December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">\u201cWe\u2019re still working with Airbus on Project Sunrise coming to life in 2027,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">The airline already had some ultra-long-haul services such as Perth-Paris, Perth-London, Perth-Rome, Rome-Sydney and Melbourne-Dallas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Another such service is Auckland-New York, where it competes with Air New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Singapore Airlines currently operates the world\u2019s longest regular airline service, flying Singapore-New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">That journey typically takes 18.5 to 19 hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\">Sydney-New York and Sydney-London would be longer flights than any commercial service worldwide.<\/p>\n<p class=\"nUsMXbVhTwNo\" style=\"display:none\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/john-weekes\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/author\/john-weekes\/\" target=\"_blank\">John Weekes<\/a> is a business journalist covering aviation.
