You know the story: Christian Dior, walking down the street in Paris, tripped over a large metal star. He took this as a sign that he should open his own couture house\u2014and, being a superstitious fellow, began carrying a small star around in his pocket as a lucky charm. The designer also loved roses. He planted lavish acres of them at his country home, Ch\u00e2teau de la Colle Noire in Provence<\/a>. For the new Collection Priv\u00e9e Christian Dior fragrance, perfumer Francis Kurk\u00addjian married these two elements by creating a rose<\/a> scent composed of five perfectly balanced facets, so that it is, olfactorily speaking, in the shape of a star.<\/p>\n

When you smell a fresh rose, Kurkdjian explains, your nose detects citrus, spice, fruit, and honey\u2014as well as a fifth facet, which defies classification. \u201cI\u2019m calling it umami,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not an actual scent; it\u2019s more the feeling of something very dewy and velvety.\u201d Spray the perfume on paper and you\u2019ll smell the first four facets\u2014but you won\u2019t detect the elusive umami effect until you wear it on your skin.<\/p>\n

The Chateau de La Colle Noire in Provence was Christian Dior\u2019s country estate. It also inspired the new Rose Star perfume.<\/p>\n

\u201cPerfume on a blotter is like a piece of clothing on a hanger,\u201d Kurkdjian says. \u201cSkin brings depth, breath, and soul. Its warmth makes fragrance become something more than it is in the bottle.\u201d<\/p>\n

What does Rose Star become? A beautiful, modern rose: pale, transparent, and infused with light. It\u2019s not fusty or old-\u00adfashioned; it radiates the clarity and the soft beauty of both the flower and the celestial body it\u2019s named after. Kurkdjian composed the scent so that it remains unchanged even hours after you put it on, like a star that does not flicker. And if it also happens to bring you luck? Monsieur Dior would say that\u2019s no coincidence.<\/p>\n
