Stellantis Built a Door. – Moby THE GIST

Our analysts just identified a stock with the potential to be the next Nvidia. Tell us how you invest and we’ll show you why it’s our #1 pick. Tap here.

Dutch automaker Stellantis is offering to rent its underutilized plants in France to Chinese EV makers.

Stellantis, which owns Jeep, Ram, Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat and nine other brands, struck a deal with China’s state-owned Dongfeng to build Chinese electric vehicles inside Europe.

         WHAT HAPPENED

Some deals come together with the kind of ease that makes them feel inevitable. The joint venture between Stellantis and Dongfeng is among them, much to the EU’s chagrin.

The joint venture covers sales, distribution, manufacturing, purchasing, and engineering of Dongfeng’s premium Voyah-branded electric and hybrid vehicles. They’ll be manufactured in Stellantis’ Rennes plant.

Stellantis will hold a 51% controlling stake to Dongfeng’s 49%. In exchange, Dongfeng will manufacture Jeep and Peugeot models in China for local and global markets. Voyah had long planned to enter several European Union markets, including Germany, France, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, with a 2024 launch, but those plans were derailed by the EU’s special tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles.

The Rennes plant has been operating well below capacity for years, as European auto demand remains well below pre-Covid levels. It now assembles only a single high-end Citroën SUV. For Stellantis, the arrangement solves a factory utilization problem while generating revenue from spare capacity. And the deal gives Voyah the perfect entry into the EU. Chinese EVs face an additional import duty of up to 35% in the EU on top of the existing 10% import tariff, but building the vehicles locally neutralizes that penalty entirely.

The joint venture will leverage Stellantis’ dealer network and after-sales infrastructure, and will tap into Dongfeng’s highly competitive Chinese EV supply chain for joint purchasing and engineering. It’s also the second such deal Stellantis has inked back-to-back. Stellantis already has a joint venture with Leapmotor, the scope of which is now expanding beyond distribution into manufacturing, with plans to jointly build two models in Spain.

      WHY IT MATTERS

One stock. Nvidia-level potential. 30M+ investors trust Moby to find it first. Get the pick. Tap here.

There are, indeed, perfect matches in business.

The pattern is unmistakable: a major Western automaker that’s struggling to compete is systematically opening its factory floors to Chinese brands in exchange for cash flow and supply chain access.

The context is critical. Stellantis is doing this because it needs the revenue, the production volume, and the Chinese EV technology to remain competitive in a market that’s rapidly electrifying.

But the broader implication is uncomfortable and ironic: the EU erected tariff walls to protect its auto industry from Chinese competition, and now European automakers are helping Chinese brands tunnel under those walls by lending them their factories.

The tariffs, designed to buy European carmakers time to catch up on EVs, are effectively being monetized by those same carmakers as a revenue opportunity.

     WHAT’S NEXT

This is the latest move by Stellantis chief Antonio Filosa to revive sales and profits at the world’s fourth-largest automaker, particularly in Europe, where the shift away from combustion engines has been sputtering. This joint venture is based on a non-binding memorandum of understanding, so formal completion is still ahead. But this could and would be just one of many more.

The bigger question is whether Stellantis’ new CEO can use Chinese partnerships to stabilize the business in the short term without creating a competitive dynamic that threatens its own brands in the long run.

Europe Built Walls Against Chinese EVs.
