PARIS, June 2 (Reuters) – French President \u2060Emmanuel \u2060Macron and his Rwandan \u2060counterpart Paul Kagame on Tuesday inaugurated a \u200bmemorial in Paris to honour the victims of the \u200c1994 genocide against the \u200cTutsis in Rwanda.<\/p>\n

Macron said the memorial placed the \u2060genocide \u2060of the Tutsis “at the heart of our capital and \u200bour history”, and that it was “the culmination of a long and painstaking quest for the truth”.<\/p>\n

\u2022 In May 2021, \u200bduring a visit to Rwanda, Macron recognised his country\u2019s \u2060responsibility in \u2060the Rwandan genocide \u2060and \u200bsaid he hoped for forgiveness, seeking to reset relations after \u200byears of Rwandan \u2060accusations that France was complicit in the 1994 slaughter of an estimated 800,000 people \u2014 mostly ethnic Tutsis. However, he stopped short of issuing a formal apology.<\/p>\n

\u2022 \u2060This was after a commission established by Macron concluded in \u2060March 2021 that France had been blinded by its colonial attitude to events leading up to the genocide and bore a “serious and overwhelming” responsibility for failing to foresee the slaughter.<\/p>\n

\u2022 The memorial on the banks of the Seine river in the heart of Paris is named “L’Archive”. It was \u2060designed by Portuguese artist Grada Kilomba. It consists of two black steles and bears an engraved tribute to the hundreds of thousands of men, \u200bwomen, and children massacred between April and \u200bJuly 1994.<\/p>\n
