The decision followed prolonged disputes between European aerospace group Airbus and France\u2019s\u00a0Dassault Aviation.<\/p>\n
Reuters noted that the companies failed to\u00a0reach an\u00a0agreement on\u00a0how work under the program should be\u00a0divided and who would hold patent rights to\u00a0the technologies being developed. Back in\u00a0May, Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury said the FCAS project no\u00a0longer matched current realities and needed to\u00a0be\u00a0reviewed.<\/p>\n
With the program set to\u00a0be\u00a0abandoned, Dassault plans to\u00a0continue developing France\u2019s\u00a0Rafale fighter. Airbus, meanwhile, may explore other partnership options, including cooperation with Sweden\u2019s\u00a0Saab, the maker of\u00a0the Gripen, or\u00a0with participants in\u00a0the GCAP program, under which Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan are working on\u00a0a\u00a0sixth-generation fighter jet.<\/p>\n
At\u00a0the same time, one Reuters source said Germany and France do\u00a0not intend to\u00a0end every FCAS-related effort. The leaders of\u00a0the two countries agreed to\u00a0preserve work on\u00a0the shared architecture of\u00a0the FCAS Combat Cloud, a\u00a0system designed to\u00a0connect manned aircraft and drones into a\u00a0single network.<\/p>\n
The German and French defense ministries are expected to\u00a0prepare further plans and several joint weapons projects. These are due to\u00a0be\u00a0presented at\u00a0the Franco-German Council of\u00a0Ministers, scheduled for mid-July.<\/p>\n
Berlin\u2019s\u00a0interest in\u00a0the GCAP program was previously reported by\u00a0Corriere della Sera. In\u00a0February, the newspaper wrote, citing sources, that Germany was considering joining the joint project by\u00a0Rome, London and Tokyo to\u00a0create a\u00a0new combat aircraft.<\/p>\n
The Future Combat Air System program was launched in\u00a02017.
