This is the first dedicated to health-related topics.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/emmanuel-macron\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Macron<\/a>\u00a0will participate in a meeting on &#8220;reforming the global health architecture&#8221; with the World Health Organization (WHO), and will address the summit on Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elysee.fr\/emmanuel-macron\/2026\/02\/09\/one-health-summit-pour-une-meilleure-sante-du-vivant-et-de-la-planete\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">agenda<\/a> has three main themes: to improve international cooperation and the sharing of data and research; to combat infectious diseases of animal origin, brought to the fore by the <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/coronavirus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Covid-19<\/a>\u00a0pandemic, and to focus on combating diseases to which the lived environment can contribute, such as diabetes and cardiovascular problems.<\/p>\n<p>The leaders of Botswana, Cambodia, Ghana and Mongolia are in attendance, alongside\u00a0ministers from some 20 countries who will participate in themed discussions on Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/environment\/20260220-a-vicious-cycle-that-exhausts-bodies-and-minds-the-human-cost-of-climate-change\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">&#8216;A vicious cycle that exhausts bodies and minds&#8217;: the human cost of climate change<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;By bringing together all disciplines and areas of expertise, we have laid the foundations for a truly integrated approach to health, capable of meeting contemporary <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/health\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">health<\/a> challenges,&#8221; French Minister of Research, Philippe Baptiste, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Sylvie Briand, chief\u00a0scientist at the\u00a0<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WHO<\/a>, told RFI that human health is intimately tied to the health of animals, plants and the <a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/tag\/environment\/\" class=\"gtm-add-suggested-tag\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">environment<\/a>, saying: &#8220;We are all connected.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the WHO, three-quarters of infectious diseases that affect humans\u00a0\u2013 including Covid-19, Ebola and\u00a0<a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/africa\/20240918-gavi-alliance-secures-500-000-doses-of-mpox-vaccine-for-africa-amid-outbreak\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mpox<\/a> \u2013 now come from wild animals.<\/p>\n<p>While this phenomenon has always existed, it has increased in recent years. Briand says this is in part due to changing lifestyles and mobility, with more opportunities for infections to spread in urban contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Viruses such as Covid-19 have also learned to adapt to their human hosts, making contagion all the more likely, she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Funding deficit <\/p>\n<p>Another key topic being addressed by the summit is the overuse of antibiotics, in both humans and animals.<\/p>\n<p>According to veterinarian and epidemiologist Fran\u00e7ois Moutou, formerly of the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health &amp; Safety, the message to doctors should be to &#8220;prescribe antibiotics when necessary and not indiscriminately&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>By lowering consumption of antibiotics for farm animals, &#8220;we lower the risk of developing new resistant bacteria and this is in the public interest,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/international\/20250412-who-members-reach-accord-in-principle-over-how-to-tackle-future-pandemics\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">WHO members reach accord &#8216;in principle&#8217; over how to tackle future pandemics<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The primary challenge for the One Health summit is funding, which has decreased around the world in recent years \u2013 most notably from the United States, which has <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news\/item\/24-01-2026-who-statement-on-notification-of-withdrawal-of-the-united-states\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">withdrawn support for the WHO under President Donald Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace said: &#8220;The budgetary context is very complicated&#8230; [but] this summit is not at all inconsistent. Politically, we are here.
