{"id":3305,"date":"2026-04-07T13:36:32","date_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/3305\/"},"modified":"2026-04-07T13:36:32","modified_gmt":"2026-04-07T13:36:32","slug":"sarkozy-challenges-conviction-over-alleged-libya-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/3305\/","title":{"rendered":"Sarkozy challenges conviction over alleged Libya funding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 French former president <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-nicolas-sarkozy-emmanuel-macron-prison-c653ae145373e17062bbb8ee4611dcd2\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Nicolas Sarkozy<\/a> maintained <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-sarkozy-trial-libya-campaign-financing-333554b4e531a0f93f891cb8442aedab\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">his innocence<\/a> on Tuesday, telling an appeal hearing in Paris that not a single cent from Libya helped fund his 2007 presidential campaign.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI owe the truth to the French people,\u201d Sarkozy told a three-judge panel during a hearing in the case that led him to spend <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/sarkozy-prison-diary-france-far-right-f44fd391c43f5a5e332c79fad693157c\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">20 days in prison<\/a> before being granted release pending appeal. \u201cI\u2019m innocent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sarkozy, 71, is challenging his <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/nicolas-sarkozy-prison-france-libya-elysee-sante-3f8ecf08fd10e5c3812c9e48b2f01d7b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">conviction<\/a> after being found guilty in September of criminal conspiracy. (AP Photo\/Thibault Camus)\"  width=\"599\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1775568992_320_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sarkozy stressed he championed Western military intervention in Libya in 2011 after Gadhafi\u2019s regime violently <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/middle-east-africa-libya-united-nations-tripoli-75feca9c40d04f94abc7d79d7e934f39\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">cracked down<\/a> on anti-government protesters, when Arab Spring pro-democracy protests swept the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI took the initiative, France took the initiative. Why? Because Gadhafi had no hold over me \u2014 financially, politically or personally,\u201d Sarkozy said.<\/p>\n<p>Gadhafi was killed by opposition fighters in October 2011, ending his four-decade rule of the North African country.<\/p>\n<p>Sarkozy\u2019s appeal hearing comes after families of French victims of a 1989 plane bombing expressed their distress last week over possible promises made to Gadhafi\u2019s government as part of the alleged deal.<\/p>\n<p>Libya in 2003 took responsibility for both the 1988 plane bombing over Lockerbie, in Scotland, and the bombing of UTA flight 772 over Niger the next year that killed 170 people, including 54 French nationals on board.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe that such unspeakable suffering can only be answered with the truth,\u201d Sarkozy said.<\/p>\n<p>Financial prosecutors have accused Sarkozy of having promised to lift the arrest warrant targeting Gadhafi\u2019s brother-in-law and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senoussi, accused of masterminding the attacks, in exchange for alleged campaign financing. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe truth is that I did not act in favor of Mr. Senoussi \u2026 who is in prison (in Libya) because he was arrested following the international action led by France,\u201d Sarkozy said. \u201cI never promised him anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The trial at Paris appeals court is scheduled to last until June 3, with a verdict expected at a later date. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDefendants have so far been unable to explain all the inconsistencies that may exist in this case,\u201d Vincent Brengarth, lawyer for French anti-corruption group Sherpa, told reporters. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cUp to now, the various hearings have not resulted in these explanations, and we are now expecting them from the main defendant, namely Nicolas Sarkozy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Sarkozy has faced <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-sarkozy-libya-gadhafi-financing-legal-cases-bef0bbb69c855ae06c21033dc6424db6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">multiple legal cases<\/a> since leaving office.
