{"id":35281,"date":"2026-06-14T02:05:23","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T02:05:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/35281\/"},"modified":"2026-06-14T02:05:23","modified_gmt":"2026-06-14T02:05:23","slug":"gold-fever-sends-some-vintage-luxury-watches-to-the-melting-furnace-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/35281\/","title":{"rendered":"Gold fever sends some vintage luxury watches to the melting furnace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"article-description\">Used models by the likes of Omega and LVMH\u2019s Tag Heuer are most hit by the trend<\/p>\n<p>Published Sun, Jun 14, 2026 \u00b7 09:15 AM<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">[LONDON] Omega\u2019s Constellation watch has been flashed in campaigns, movies and at the Met Gala by stars like George Clooney and Nicole Kidman, turning it into a symbol of luxury and glamour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">But with gold prices <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/international\/global\/gold-climbs-record-high-above-us5300-us-dollar-slips\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">near record highs struck in January,<\/a> some such classic watches are being melted down as the value of their metal content outstrips their resale worth.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Used models by the likes of Omega and LVMH\u2019s Tag Heuer are most hit by the trend, according to Reuters interviews with over a dozen traders, industry experts, and investment advisers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">British dealer Jon White of Gold Traders melted down an 18-carat late-1970s Constellation in excellent condition in May, one of dozens of mainstream luxury watches he has had scrapped in 2026 as demand for investment gold has risen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBeautiful watch. But in reality, had the customer consigned that to auction, what would they have achieved?\u201c White, who also manages an auction house, told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The gold content of the Constellation watch, one of many models produced by Swatch-owned Omega, was worth \u00a35,750 (S$10,005), 35 per cent more than its estimated \u00a34,000 to \u00a34,500 auction value, White said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">James Lamdin, founder of Watches of Switzerland\u2019s second-hand unit Analog Shift, said melting was \u201cprimarily happening with contemporary preowned and also with older vintage watches that are not already collectible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Spokespersons for Swatch and Rolex said they would not comment for this story. LVMH, Richemont, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Liquid gold<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Gold prices surged to a record US$5,600 an ounce in January as geopolitical concerns and trade worries pushed investors towards safe-haven precious metals. Gold now hovers <a class=\"text-verticals-btblue underline hover:text-blue-500\" data-testid=\"article-annotation-link-component\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/companies-markets\/energy-commodities\/gold-jumps-after-trump-signals-us-iran-truce-deal-close\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">around US$4,200 per ounce<\/a> (about 28.3 g), almost double its 2024 average.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The market price for used watches has not moved in the same way, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI find it very sad, because obviously once something has been melted, it\u2019s gone forever,\u201d said Adrian Hailwood, a specialist in horological history.<\/p>\n<p>  <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cassette.sphdigital.com.sg\/image\/businesstimes\/88ca7d36bf5350a208209d74ee0e633499396beaa7af2cb0d344f57f7d9b293f\" alt=\"\" height=\"760\" width=\"1140\" class=\"block max-w-full w-full\"\/> Molten gold from old jewellery, including luxury watches, being poured into a mould at Hatton Garden Metals in London on Jun 10. World Gold Council data shows overall gold recycling in the first quarter rose 5 per cent to 366 tonnes, while gold jewellery demand rose 31 per cent in value to US$47 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Watches can hold anything from a sliver of gold to more than 200 g, meaning their scrap value can run into tens of thousands of dollars. PHOTO: REUTERS  <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">New watches that are overproduced might also be melted down.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen a lot of totally mediocre watches get melted down,\u201d said Lamdin. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of unsold overstock in the Swiss market. And those watches are basically brand new, unworn, and they\u2019re just getting stripped down&#8230; they made too many of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cBut when you have something that\u2019s vintage and rare and has some story or some patina, that\u2019s where it becomes a short-sighted tragedy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The resale trap<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">High-end brands that tightly manage new production like privately owned Patek Philippe and Rolex command the highest premiums over melt value, three industry experts said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For some models \u201cthe wait lists are astronomical. You\u2019re talking anything from two to eight years,\u201d said Simon Lazarus, head of PR and content at online luxury watch platform Chrono Hunter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Rolex accounted last year for 61 per cent of the sales value of new Swiss watches priced above 3,000 Swiss francs (S$4,920), up from 57 per cent in 2023 despite lower volumes, according to Vontobel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Less exclusive brands like Tag Heuer, Breitling and Omega struggle to command high new retail prices, however, as buyers can buy a second-hand timepiece for much less.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Models like Omega\u2019s Speedmaster often depreciate sharply once sold, exposing them to scrapping, three experts said.<\/p>\n<p>To sell or not to sell<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Higher gold prices motivated retired New York engineer Mitchell Talisman to sell two gold watches and a chain containing a combined 35 g of gold with 58 per cent purity for US$2,660 cash in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cI\u2019d had a bunch of stuff sitting in a safety deposit box for over 10 years,\u201d he told Reuters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For some owners however, the idea of selling a watch only for it to be melted by a dealer is too much to bear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIt may be a family piece, it may be their first watch,\u201d said Hailwood.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThey don\u2019t like the idea of it being destroyed, so they keep it.\u201d REUTERS<\/p>\n<p class=\"font-lucida text-xl font-medium italic leading-normal -tracking-5% text-gray-850\">Decoding Asia newsletter: your guide to navigating Asia in a new global order.
