In a hidden room at the very back of a Milanese palazzo that can be entered only after one has passed several checkpoints, a glimmering orb is refracting shards of light onto the walls. Outside, on the street, a line stretches down the block. Here, inside the hushed enclave, behind a velvet rope, a small crowd of people gather, murmuring and jotting notes. But it\u2019s not a piece of priceless high jewelry on display, it\u2019s a one-of-a-kind iteration of Est\u00fadio Campana\u2019s iconic Cocoon chair, which was introduced in 2015 with Louis Vuitton Objets Nomades in fiberglass and leather. Now reappearing in a shaggy technicolor coat of reflective glass, and dramatically tethered to an overhead beam by a single nylon cord, this chair gently twists and turns as if to show itself off.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt brings lightness in the spirit for dark times. An escape from reality,\u201d says designer Humberto Campana, who founded his Brazilian design studio alongside his brother Fernando in the mid-1980s and has worked with Louis Vuitton for more than a decade, creating fantastical pieces. When the luxury house approached him to consider a collaboration with French artist G\u00e9raldine Gonzalez, he says he was thrilled. The resulting Cocoon Dichroic involved three months of handiwork from Gonzalez, who cut and shaped each of the \u201cleaves\u201d of iridescent dichroic glass. \u201cI love seeing the vision of another artist\u2014it gives a new spirit to the object,\u201d Campana says. \u201cThe possibility to work with new materials gives the possibility to create a new narrative.\u201d The result is the singular chair, offered at $167,000.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy work is always about an invitation to travel to different worlds,\u201d says the designer, whose focus these days is on growing the Instituto Campana, a S\u00e3o Paulo\u2013based foundation he and his brother launched in 2009. \u201cI need to focus on something that I believe in, in order to find a meaning for life,\u201d Campana says. \u201cMy work is about this\u2014a therapy. So I try to give back in another positive way, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n
