{"id":374,"date":"2026-03-30T09:47:23","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T09:47:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/374\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T09:47:23","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T09:47:23","slug":"socialist-emmanuel-gregoire-wins-paris-mayoral-race-politico","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/374\/","title":{"rendered":"Socialist Emmanuel Gr\u00e9goire wins Paris mayoral race\u00a0 \u2013 POLITICO"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cTonight Parisians have sent a message to Jordan Bardella, to Marine Le Pen and to those who worked behind the scenes for a union of right-wing parties,\u201d Gr\u00e9goire said in a short speech before hopping on a bike to head to city hall. \u201cThe message is clear: Paris is not and will never be a far-right city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His supporters in Paris were are celebrating, singing \u201cEmmanuel\u201d and\u201cOn a gagn\u00e9\u201d (we won).<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e9goire finished the first round 12 points clear of Dati, but the runoff was expected to be a tougher challenge after other right-wing candidates coalesced behind Dati\u2019s campaign. Two candidates who qualified for the second round, the center-right former lawmaker Pierre-Yves Bournazel and far-right MEP Sarah Knafo, both left the race to avoid splitting the vote. \u200b\u200b<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"693\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/GettyImages-2267871244-1024x693.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8152442\"  \/>Mayoral candidate Emmanuel Gr\u00e9goire is pictured in Paris following the announcement of the results of the second round of France\u2019s local elections on March 22, 2026. | Kenzo Tribouillard\/AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e9goire, however, chose not to team up with Chikirou on principle due to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/enter-the-disruptor-french-far-left-jean-luc-melenchon-seizes-momentum-in-national-elections\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">her party\u2019s abrasive, confrontational approach<\/a> to the local election.<\/p>\n<p>During the campaign, Gr\u00e9goire, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/paris-mayor-election-emmanuel-gregoire-anne-hidalgo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prot\u00e9g\u00e9-turned-enemy<\/a> of outgoing Mayor Anne Hidalgo, focused his message on solving the housing shortage and bringing down the cost of living. The 48-year-old had worked in Hidalgo\u2019s administration for a decade in various top roles, including as her main deputy from 2018 until 2024, when he won a seat in the National Assembly.<\/p>\n<p>But Gr\u00e9goire and Hidalgo\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/paris-mayor-election-emmanuel-gregoire-anne-hidalgo\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">messy falling out<\/a> forced the candidate to distance himself from his former boss.
