{"id":3753,"date":"2026-04-08T13:09:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T13:09:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/3753\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T13:09:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T13:09:06","slug":"french-emissions-falling-too-slowly-to-meet-countrys-climate-targets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/3753\/","title":{"rendered":"French emissions falling too slowly to meet country&#8217;s climate targets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n                        France cut its greenhouse gas emissions by just 1.5 percent in 2025 \u2013 far below what is needed to meet its climate goals, according to figures published on Wednesday by the national body responsible for tracking emissions.        <\/p>\n<p class=\"m-pub-dates\">Issued on: 08\/04\/2026 &#8211; 14:59<\/p>\n<p>    2 min    Reading time\n<\/p>\n<p>The Atmospheric Pollution Technical Interprofessional Centre, known as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citepa.org\/en\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Citepa<\/a>, said the figures show a pronounced slowdown in comparison with recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The decline in emissions slowed to 1.5 percent in 2025, compared with a drop of 1.8 percent in 2024 and stronger cuts in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe downward trend in emissions is continuing, although at a slower pace,\u201d the body said in a statement, adding that the current rate \u201cremains insufficient\u201d to meet climate targets.<\/p>\n<p>France aims to cut emissions by around 4 percent per year between 2024 and 2028 under its national low-carbon strategy, which is designed to reach carbon neutrality by 2050.<\/p>\n<p class=\"a-read-more\"><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/france\/20260219-totalenergies-in-french-court-accused-of-failing-to-limit-climate-damage\" class=\"a-read-more__link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">TotalEnergies in French court accused of failing to limit climate damage<\/a><\/p>\n<p> Slowing momentum <\/p>\n<p>The slowdown comes as several wealthy countries struggle to maintain progress on climate action, even as global temperatures continue to approach record levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn France, rollbacks in public policies on the ecological transition are being paid for in hard cash, with greenhouse gas emissions falling three times more slowly than national climate targets in 2024 and 2025,\u201d said Anne Bringault, programme director at R\u00e9seau Action Climat, a network of environmental groups.<\/p>\n<p>She described the record of successive governments since 2024 as \u201cdeplorable\u201d and called for a \u201cstrong response\u201d from public authorities.<\/p>\n<p>Similar patterns are emerging elsewhere.
