The outbreak is moving fast, with nearly 1,100 confirmed cases and 277 deaths, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus shared during a Wednesday briefing.

The Ebola virus spreads through bodily fluids or direct contact with an infected person, rather than through the air. Officials noted that the remains of people who died from Ebola must be handled carefully to stop the continued spread of the virus. The current epidemic marked the DRC’s second-largest Ebola outbreak of the country’s 16 previous Ebola epidemics, according to a Tuesday WHO release. Early detection and care helped more than 100 people recover from the illness, Tedros added. Two new drugs aimed at reducing Ebola’s lethality will go under trial in the DRC next week, Tedros said. He added that the international risk of transmission still remained low.

Has Ebola spread to any other countries? A total of 20 cases were reported in the DRC neighbor Uganda, along with two confirmed deaths, Ghebreyesus said. The newest case was reported on Sunday, marking the first case reported in Uganda for two weeks, he added. Uganda closed its western border about a month ago in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading.

A French healthcare worker who cared for Ebola patients in the DRC tested positive for the virus after returning to France, marking the country’s first recorded case of Ebola. The patient will undergo nearly a month of isolation and remain under close monitoring, according to a Wednesday statement from France’s health ministry.

Loading the Audio Player… World Health Organization officials reported Wednesday that the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic…

[2
493,13931,3088,28058,12604,5,709,10878,194,12536,28059,28057,10301,35
post-40860","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-france","tag-africa","tag-congo","tag-death","tag-democratic","tag-ebola","tag-france","tag-health","tag-illness","tag-international","tag-organization","tag-republic","tag-uganda","tag-virus","tag-world
["GET
