Netflix\u2019s \u201cQueer Eye\u201d cast is no stranger to behind-the-scenes dust-ups, and now star Tan France is opening up about one previously unknown point of tension from early in his time on the reboot: coming out.<\/p>\n
Tan, who\u2019s from a conservative Muslim family of Pakistani descent, shared on Jesse Tyler Ferguson\u2019s \u201cDinner\u2019s On Me\u201d podcast Tuesday that the fact he was not openly gay to his family while the series was filming ahead of its 2018 premiere caused a \u201cheated argument\u201d with one of his Fab Five cast mates.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve never said this before, and I won\u2019t say who it was, but during filming of that first season, somebody on the cast was quite frustrated with me when they found out that I wasn\u2019t out to my family,\u201d France said, explaining that they said, \u201cWell, basically, you\u2019re kind of a traitor to us on this show if you\u2019re not out. Like, how can you be on \u2018Queer Eye\u2019 and not be singing it from the rooftops?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe got into a heated argument, and I was saying, \u2018You have no idea what my experience is as a queer Muslim, a queer Brown person, a queer immigrant,’\u201d France continued.\u00a0\u201c\u2018It\u2019s all well and good, you saying this, but you will never understand what it\u2019s like as a person of color trying to come out when you\u2019ve had nobody ever say those words in your community before.’\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cSo yeah, I was navigating something so different to everybody else at the time, so it felt really heavy.\u00a0But once my family accepted it and understood it \u2014 and now, God, they\u2019re a huge part of my life. They love my husband. They love my kids. We are so close again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the podcast, France recalled finally coming out to his family \u2014 just two days before \u201cQueer Eye\u201d premiered.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat must have been really intense,\u201d Ferguson empathized as France admitted to feeling \u201cphysically sick\u201d about the conversation.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know a lot of people come out when they\u2019re younger, and I\u2019m very happy for them, and that\u2019s amazing that they can,\u201d France reflected. \u201cI was in a Pakistani-Muslim family. You\u2019re not coming out early. You\u2019re just not. I\u2019d never heard another South Asian say, \u2018I\u2019m gay.\u2019 I think that most of my people just assumed it was a white person thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The entertainer used his mother as an example, explaining she\u2019d never even \u201cthought of the notion that two people of the same gender could be into each other. And so it\u2019s teaching somebody the basics of what queer people are \u2014 and then saying, \u2018And now I\u2019m telling you I am one of those.’\u201d<\/p>\n
Coming out to his family ultimately led to a falling out where they did not speak to France for a year, he said. But after watching \u201cQueer Eye,\u201d they came around to understanding \u201cyou\u2019re not the devil just because you\u2019re gay.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re very, very, very close,\u201d France emphasized.<\/p>\n
France\u2019s admission to clashing with one of his \u201cQueer Eye\u201d co-stars came Tuesday just weeks after Fab Five cast mate Karamo Brown opened up<\/a> about his own tensions on the reality TV series.
