EU member states voted on Thursday to continue suspending the bloc\u2019s retaliatory tariffs on the United States in the long-running trade dispute between Airbus and Boeing, according to two EU diplomats. <\/p>\n
The move, comes as Brussels seeks to avoid reigniting a transatlantic trade war at a time when tensions between the EU and the U.S. have been easing. Just this week the European Union\u00a0gave its final green light\u00a0to the trade deal it struck with President Donald Trump last year, News.Az<\/a> reports, citing Politico<\/a>.<\/p>\n Thursday\u2019s vote prolongs the suspension of the EU\u2019s retaliatory tariffs \u2014 affecting $4 billion in imports of U.S. goods such as aircraft, tobacco and spirits. These were\u00a0imposed in 2020\u00a0at the height of the transatlantic dispute over subsidies to Airbus and Boeing.<\/p>\n For almost two decades, the European Union and the United States accused each other of illegally subsidizing Airbus<\/a> and Boeing. After years of litigation the World Trade Organization\u00a0found that both sides\u00a0had broken the rules,\u00a0paving the way\u00a0for retaliatory tariffs affecting $11.5 billion in bilateral trade.<\/p>\n A truce struck in 2021 between the European Commission and the Biden administration has kept the dispute in abeyance ever since. It was due to expire on July 11.<\/p>\n The duration of the new suspension is still being negotiated between Washington and Brussels, an EU official said.<\/p>\n
