\n\tFedEx<\/a> is divesting its third-party logistics<\/a> (3PL<\/a>) segment to ocean carrier giant CMA CGM<\/a> for $1.4 billion.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Memphis, Tenn.-based company will sell its supply chain services subsidiary, FedEx<\/a> Supply Chain, to the French container shipping firm in a deal that enables FedEx to further focus on its air and ground delivery operations. The unit specializes in fulfillment, distribution, warehousing and transportation management, as well as returns, repairs and refurbishment.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe selloff comes as FedEx has sought to run a leaner operation<\/a> and bolster delivery efficiency in recent years. The company spun off its FedEx Freight<\/a> trucking unit into a standalone company on June 1.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe transaction would further fortify CMA CGM<\/a>\u2019s diversification into logistics<\/a> services beyond its ocean freight roots, as those segments buoy company revenues when freight rates decline. The company has developed a global ports and terminal operating business<\/a> upon seeking to gain more control over the end-to-end container supply chain. From 2019 to 2024, the logistics giant saw equity-adjusted volumes at its properties increase 55 percent, the steepest of any such ocean carrier, according to analysis from Drewry.<\/p>\n

\n\tCMA CGM says the transaction would nearly triple the size of its North American contract logistics operations, which operate under its 3PL<\/a> subsidiary Ceva Logistics<\/a>. Following the deal, the combined entity would operate approximately 150 warehouses and employ 20,000 people at more than 240 locations across the continent.<\/p>\n

\n\tNearly 10,000 employees would come over from FedEx in the deal. According to the delivery company\u2019s annual report last year, FedEx Supply Chain operated its supply chain logistics services through 80 facilities as of May 31, 2025.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe acquisition is expected to close in 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals. The $1.4 billion enterprise value of the deal is the same amount FedEx initially acquired the unit for in 2015. At the time of that acquisition, FedEx Supply Chain was known as Genco.<\/p>\n

\n\tAfter the deal closes, CMA CGM and FedEx will enter into multi-year commercial agreements related to air and ocean freight that are expected to commence in different phases between through 2028.<\/p>\n

\n\tCMA CGM will become a preferred ocean carrier for FedEx, offering ocean transport and carrier services under a non-exclusive agreement. The companies will also work together on select air cargo capacity solutions to enhance their respective global networks in the interest of higher aircraft utilization and flexible long-haul capacity.<\/p>\n

\n\tFedEx CEO Raj Subramaniam emphasized that the move allows the company to increase its forward-looking focus on high-value verticals<\/a> including healthcare, automotive, aerospace and data centers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBy streamlining our portfolio, FedEx is better positioned to execute our long-term vision and continue to serve as the heartbeat of the industrial economy, delivering unmatched connectivity, reliability, and value to our customers globally,\u201d said Subramaniam in a statement. We look forward to leveraging our complementary relationship with global logistics solutions provider CMA CGM to support the next chapter for FedEx Supply Chain and its team members.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCMA CGM, on the other hand, gets its foothold in the U.S. market that would set it up better for competition with contract logistics players including GXO, C.H. Robinson and DHL Supply Chain. Two months after President Donald Trump took office last year, CMA CGM Group chairman and CEO Rodolphe Saad\u00e9 committed $20 billion<\/a> in logistics, shipbuilding and supply chain upgrades in the U.S. over the next four years.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThe acquisition and partnership with FedEx represent a major step in the development of Ceva Logistics and our logistics activities in North America,\u201d said Saad\u00e9 in a statement. \u201cWe are strengthening our ability to provide customers with integrated supply chain solutions. These deals also reinforce our long-term commitment to investing in the United States and supporting the resilience and efficiency of its supply chain.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tCeva also gets to expand its horizons in the U.S. two years after the 3PL lost out in a bidding war with GXO<\/a> to acquire U.K.-based logistics services provider Wincanton. That deal went for $965 million.<\/p>\n

\n\tLast month, Germany-based logistics publication DVZ International reported that Patrick Moebel, the former president of FedEx Logistics, was set to become the new CEO of Ceva Logistics, replacing Mathieu Friedberg.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut Moebel\u2019s appointment has not yet been announced publicly. Freidberg had presided over CMA CGM\u2019s massive $5 billion acquisition<\/a> of Bollor\u00e9 Logistics that was approved in February 2024.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FedEx is divesting its third-party logistics (3PL) segment to ocean carrier giant CMA CGM for $1.4 billion.
