For those who follow the auto industry closely, that is a pretty big deal. These are not facilities that media members get to walk through very often.

In this article▾

Stamping Is Where The Vehicle Starts
Sterling Stamping Brings Massive Scale
Pride On Every Shift
Warren Stamping Adds Speed And Flexibility
Quality Starts Before Assembly
Why These Plants Matter
A Rare Look Behind The Curtain

For many Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep®, and Ram models, that starting point is inside Stellantis’ stamping operations. That is where massive coils of metal are transformed into the hoods, doors, roofs, fenders, liftgates, tailgates, floor pans, and structural pieces that eventually become the vehicles customers see on dealer lots. After seeing both Sterling and Warren up close, it is hard not to come away with a much deeper appreciation for how much work, coordination, and pride goes into the process before a vehicle ever reaches final assembly.

<img fetchpriority="high" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100209" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-25/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-25-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Sterling Stamping Plant (SSP) in Sterling Heights, Michigan. Sterling and Warren give our North America operations the scale, speed and flexibility needed to deliver precision parts on time, support key vehicle programs and help drive sustainable, profitable growth. As Stellantis executes its $13 billion U.S. investment plans, these plants and the people behind them are critical to strengthening our manufacturing foundation and keeping assembly operations moving.”

That statement really sums up what these plants mean to Stellantis’ North American footprint. Sterling and Warren sit just nine miles apart, but together they help feed a large network of assembly plants across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

For the average customer, a hood is just a hood. A door is just a door. But inside these plants, every panel has to be formed with exact precision. The shape, fit, surface quality, structural strength, and repeatability all matter. A small imperfection at the stamping level can create problems much later in the production process, which is why quality control begins right at the first press stroke.

Metal coils enter the plants and are cut, shaped, formed, inspected, assembled, and shipped out to assembly plants. The process is loud, powerful, and surprisingly choreographed. Watching it in person gives you a completely different perspective on vehicle manufacturing. These are not simple pieces of sheet metal being punched out. These are highly engineered components being formed at high speed with extremely tight tolerances.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100218" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-16/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-16-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Sterling Stamping Plant (SSP) in Sterling Heights, Michigan. The facility has been part of Chrysler’s manufacturing backbone since 1965, and today it continues to play a major role in supporting several key Stellantis vehicle programs.

The plant produces stampings and assemblies for nameplates like the Ram 1500, Dodge Durango, Chrysler Pacifica, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, Jeep Gladiator, Jeep Grand Wagoneer, and Ram Heavy Duty, among others. It also supports multiple assembly plants, including Sterling Heights Assembly Plant (SHAP), Warren Truck Assembly Plant (WTAP), Windsor Assembly Plant (WAP), the Detroit Assembly Complex, Toledo Assembly Complex, Saltillo, and more.

One thing that stood out during the visit was the sheer size of the operation. Sterling is not just stamping flat pieces of metal and sending them down the road. The plant also handles a huge amount of sub-assembly work before parts ever reach the vehicle assembly line.

For example, something like a hood is not simply stamped and shipped. The outer skin, inner structure, reinforcements, hemming, welding, and related work can all be handled within the stamping operation before the part moves on. That means the assembly plant receives a much more complete component, allowing final vehicle assembly to stay focused and efficient.

Sterling’s numbers are impressive. The operation includes 22 press lines, hundreds of dies, major assembly lines, sub-assembly cells, hemming operations, several welding types, and hundreds of robots. The plant also ships a massive amount of product every day, with outbound trucks and rail cars moving parts to customers across the Stellantis manufacturing network.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100230" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-4/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-4-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Sterling Stamping Plant (SSP) in Sterling Heights, Michigan. These are United Auto Workers (UAW)-represented employees who know exactly how important their work is. There is a lot of pride in these plants, and you can see it in the way the teams talk about their jobs.

“Our workforce is what makes an operation like this possible,” said Greg “Butch” Bauer, Vice President and Plant Manager, Sterling Stamping Plant. “There’s a level of ownership and pride across every shift that ensures we’re delivering the same quality and performance at all times.”

That pride matters because Sterling and Warren both operate on a three-shift structure. Between the two plants, that creates six coordinated shifts working to keep a steady flow of parts moving. The schedule also allows time for maintenance, service, die work, and other critical behind-the-scenes jobs needed to keep the equipment performing properly.

One of the biggest misconceptions about stamping is that the machines do everything. Yes, the equipment is massive and advanced, but the people are what keep the process working. Operators, maintenance teams, quality teams, skilled trades, and logistics workers all have to work together. When you see the size of the presses and the speed of the process, it becomes clear that human experience still plays a huge role.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100214" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-20/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-20-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Warren Stamping Plant (WSP) in Warren, Michigan. Warren Stamping Plant opened in 1949 and is one of Stellantis’ oldest active manufacturing operations. Originally known as the 9 Mile Press Plant, the facility has grown and evolved over several decades.

Today, Warren covers about 1.8 million square feet on 78 acres and produces stampings and assemblies for several important vehicle lines.

One of the most interesting pieces of equipment inside Warren is the high-speed transfer press line known internally as “Hellcat.” That nickname fits, because the line is designed for speed. It can move up to 15 pieces per minute while still maintaining the precision needed for modern vehicle production.

But the big recent news at Warren is the addition of a blanking press. In simple terms, blanking is the process of cutting flat pieces of metal, called blanks, from large coils before they are formed into final vehicle parts. By bringing more of that work in-house, Warren gains more control over quality, timing, and supply flexibility.

“The new press has the capacity to produce between 4.5 million and 6 million parts annually for vehicles, including the Ram 1500 and three Jeep models – the Wrangler, Gladiator and Grand Cherokee,” said Curtis Booth, Vice President and Plant Manager, Warren Stamping Plant. “Together, the Hellcat line and the new blanking press give WSP the ability to both prepare and form critical vehicle components within a highly integrated manufacturing operation.”

That is an important move for Stellantis. In an industry where supply chain problems can slow or stop production, being able to control more of the process internally gives the company another advantage. It also supports the automaker’s broader North American growth plans under its FaSTLAne 2030 strategy.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100224" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-10/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-10-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Warren Stamping Plant (WSP) in Warren, Michigan. These facilities are not just producing parts quickly; they are checking them constantly.

Operators use a combination of hands-on experience and advanced inspection systems to catch issues early. One of the most advanced tools in the process is the Automated Body Inspection System, or ABIS. This system captures images and analyzes part geometry to make sure components meet the required specifications.

That kind of inspection is critical because modern vehicles have tighter gaps, more complex surfaces, and higher customer expectations than ever before. A fender, door, hood, or liftgate has to look right, fit right, and perform properly once it becomes part of the vehicle.

For Jeep and Ram products especially, durability is also part of the equation. These vehicles are expected to work hard, tow, haul, go off-road, and hold up to real-world use. That starts with the structure and body components underneath the paint.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100220" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-14/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-14-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Warren Stamping Plant (WSP) in Warren, Michigan. (Stellantis).
Why These Plants Matter

Sterling helps provide a huge percentage of the surface metal used across the company’s regional lineup. Warren supports key truck and Jeep programs while adding more in-house capability through the new blanking press. Together, the two plants help keep parts flowing to assembly operations that build some of Stellantis’ most important and profitable vehicles.

For enthusiasts, it is easy to focus on engines, horsepower, screens, trims, tires, and styling. But none of that matters if the foundation is not right. The body panels, underbody structures, closures, and stamped assemblies all play a role in how a vehicle looks, feels, fits together, and performs over time.

That is what made this tour so interesting. It pulled back the curtain on a part of the industry that most people never get to see. These plants are not just supporting production. They are shaping the vehicles themselves, one panel at a time.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" data-attachment-id="100215" data-permalink="https://moparinsiders.com/stellantis-strengthens-its-michigan-stamping-plants/stellantis-stamping-operations-moparinsiders-19/" data-orig-file="https://www.europesays.com/france/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Stellantis-Stamping-Operations.-MoparInsiders.-19-scaled.jpeg" data-orig-size="2560,1440" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-title="Warren Stamping Plant (WSP) in Warren, Michigan. Stellantis does not open these facilities to media very often, and after seeing the operations firsthand, it is easy to understand why these plants are such an important part of the company’s manufacturing story.

But what stood out most was not just the size of the presses, the speed of the lines, or the amount of metal moving through the buildings every day. It was the people. The UAW members working inside these plants are the true artists behind the process. They are not just stamping parts; they are shaping the body panels and structural pieces that give Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles their identity.

It starts with a coil of metal, a powerful press, and a skilled workforce that treats each panel like a piece of craftsmanship. Most customers will never see that work happen, but every customer depends on it every time they open a door, close a hood, or get behind the wheel.

Stellantis Stamping Operations Photo Gallery:

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

 <img loading="lazy" decoding="async" alt="Robert S.
