{"id":5108,"date":"2026-04-11T17:30:19","date_gmt":"2026-04-11T17:30:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/5108\/"},"modified":"2026-04-11T17:30:19","modified_gmt":"2026-04-11T17:30:19","slug":"mystery-deepens-as-skeletons-with-sword-wounds-found-beneath-elementary-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/5108\/","title":{"rendered":"Mystery deepens as skeletons with sword wounds found beneath elementary school"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Archaeologists have\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/04\/11\/world-news\/dozens-of-ancient-skeletons-found-in-heart-of-bustling-european-city\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">uncovered ancient skeletons<\/a>\u00a0beneath a school site in France \u2014 all buried in an unusual seated position.<\/p>\n<p>The discovery was announced by Inrap, France\u2019s national institution for preventive archaeology, in a press release in March.<\/p>\n<p>The skeletons were found on the grounds of the Josephine Baker school complex in Dijon, roughly 195 miles southeast of Paris. <\/p>\n<p>The campus serves students from preschool through elementary school.<\/p>\n<p>The graves date to the Gallic period in France, a time when Celtic tribes known as the Gauls lived in the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallic period lasted from the fifth century B.C. to 50 B.C., when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/16\/lifestyle\/bronze-box-from-ancient-roman-empire-discovered-in-romania\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Julius Caesar conquered<\/a>\u00a0the area.<\/p>\n<p>Inrap first found similar Gallic burials at the site in 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While excavators found 13 graves two years ago, they discovered \u201cfive to six\u201d new graves during the most recent excavation \u2014 three of which formed a second, parallel line.<\/p>\n<p>Pictures of the site show archaeologists working as sections of ground are carefully excavated into circular pits, with skeletons positioned inside.<\/p>\n<p>French archaeologists dug up ancient skeletons buried in a bizarre seated position under a school. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>Inrap said the new graves were \u201cseated at the bottom of the pit, [their] backs against the eastern wall, facing west,\u201d according to a translated release.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir arms rest along the torso, with hands near the pelvis or femurs,\u201d the release described.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir legs are tightly flexed, often asymmetrically.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adding to the mystery, archaeologists found no personal items or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/09\/science\/egypt-dig-reveals-3000-year-old-scrolls-with-secrets\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grave offerings<\/a>, other than a black stone armband dated to the third century B.C.<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists have released few details about the site, but noted that the graves found in 2024 showed \u201csigns of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/17\/lifestyle\/unearthed-skeletons-reveal-prehistoric-mafia-style-torture-killings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">unhealed violence<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Gallic-era graves in Dijon, France, revealed signs of \u201cunhealed violence\u201d and intentional killing. AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The injuries \u201clikely indicate intentional killing,\u201d Inrap said \u2014 and included cuts on an upper arm bone.<\/p>\n<p>One individual suffered two blows from a sharp object (possibly a sword) to the skull,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials also said the discovery is significant for the number of burials and \u201cthe good state of skeletal preservation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExamples of individuals buried in a seated position are known from as early as the Mesolithic and, although rare, throughout prehistory,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnly about a dozen archaeological sites have yielded around 50 \u2018seated\u2019 burials, typically located near elite residences, sanctuaries or places of worship, and set apart from standard cemeteries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists are still investigating whether the individuals were warriors, members of elite families or figures\u00a0tied to religious practices.<\/p>\n<p>Fox News Digital reached out to Inrap for comment, but did not immediately hear back.<\/p>\n<p>This rare find follows other recent French discoveries, like a 16th-century gallows and shipwreck.
