For the special occasion, Stellantis intentionally stopped the assembly lines, something that rarely happens at the plant. Instead of watch another Wrangler (JL)<\/a> or Gladiator (JT)<\/a> move down the line, employees gathered to recognize Jeep\u2019s history and hear what the company has planned for Toledo.<\/p>\n \u201cRepresenting freedom, representing adventure, representing authenticity and representing America!\u201d Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa<\/a> told the employees of the Toledo Assembly Complex. \u201cYou are the heart of Jeep!\u201d<\/p>\n In this article\u25be<\/p>\n Built By Generations<\/a> \u2191 Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n Jeep marks its official beginning on July 15, 1941, the date Willys-Overland was chosen to serve as the primary producer of the U.S. military\u2019s newly developed light reconnaissance vehicle.<\/p>\n Military officials were searching for a small, rugged four-wheel-drive (4\u00d74) vehicle that could be operated easily and travel across terrain that traditional passenger cars and trucks could not handle. American Bantam, Ford and Willys-Overland each submitted proposals, but the Willys Quad design ultimately progressed into the MA and, later, the legendary Willys MB.<\/p>\n From 1941 through 1945, Willys produced roughly 360,000 military Jeeps. Ford also built a nearly identical version under contract to increase production during World War II. Used for reconnaissance, transporting troops and a wide range of other duties, the vehicles became known for their exceptional maneuverability, reliability and straightforward mechanical design.<\/p>\n Following the war, Willys transformed the military vehicle into a civilian model. The resulting CJ-2A<\/a> featured several everyday improvements, including larger headlights, a functional tailgate and a spare tire mounted along the side of the body. Originally marketed as a versatile work vehicle, the civilian Jeep helped create a broader lineup that would eventually include utility wagons, upscale 4\u00d74 vehicles and many of the early foundations of today\u2019s SUV market.<\/p>\n Tim Kuniskis, who is the Head of the American Brands and North America Marketing and Retail Strategy, said stopping production was an important part of recognizing the people behind that legacy.<\/p>\n \u201cIt almost never happens on purpose, so it was a very important day to celebrate with the employees and everybody who makes this happen,\u201d Kuniskis told WTVG 13 Action News<\/a>.<\/p>\n Kuniskis also highlighted the plant\u2019s impressive pace and the wide variety of Wranglers produced there.<\/p>\n \u201cWe build a Wrangler a minute here. It is staggering to think about. At the end of the line, it looks like Skittles, there\u2019s so many different versions. We\u2019re not just pumping out the same thing over and over again. It is something different for every single customer,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n That variety is part of what separates Wrangler from most modern vehicles. Company leaders also discussed nearly $400 million in planned investment for the Toledo Assembly Complex, including future updates for the Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator.<\/p>\n A new midsize pickup, the Ram Dakota<\/a>, is expected to join the Toledo lineup in 2028. The planned projects are expected to create approximately 900 jobs, strengthening the plant and its importance to northwest Ohio.<\/p>\n Toledo Assembly Complex Manager Trezelle Jenkins<\/a>, Stellantis Head of North America Manufacturing Mauro Pino<\/a>, and Filosa were among the leaders present for the milestone.<\/p>\n The event also underscored how closely Jeep\u2019s manufacturing history is tied to Toledo, where generations of families have helped make the name familiar around the world for eight decades.<\/p>\n \u2191 Back to top<\/a><\/p>\n Kuniskis also teased something beyond the known Wrangler, Gladiator, and upcoming midsize Ram Dakota plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n \u201cThere may be another surprise we are bringing to Toledo \u2014 a new version of a Jeep. I don\u2019t mean a new color, new trim or new package; I mean a complete re-think of what adventure and freedom can be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n No additional details were announced, but his wording strongly suggested that we is talking about the upcoming Wrangler-based Scrambler<\/a>. A vehicle that was highlighted at the company\u2019s Investor Day\u2019s presentation back in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n For Toledo, Jeep\u2019s 85th birthday was more than a historical celebration.
