PARIS, July 27 (Reuters) – French police \u2060detained \u2060a man on Monday after \u2060he attacked three women with knives before bystanders pinned \u200bhim to the ground and an off-duty police officer detained him, Interior Minister Laurent \u200cNunez told reporters.<\/p>\n

In the incident \u200cnear Porte de Clichy, the man attacked the three women, aged 19, \u206024 and \u206036, with two kitchen knives, severely wounding two of them, Nunez \u200bsaid.<\/p>\n

A video aired on Snapchat and verified by Reuters showed a man with long black hair wearing a cream tracksuit and wielding one big knife in each hand \u200band attempting to attack and stab a young woman. It was unclear if \u2060the \u2060woman was injured.<\/p>\n

“When I saw \u2060him \u200bstab a woman in the back, I started shouting, ‘Come on, let’s stop him!’ Several \u200bpeople stepped in,” \u2060Mohamed-Ali Bouhadjar, 26, who filmed the video and posted it on Snapchat, told Reuters.<\/p>\n

“One person threw a suitcase at him. He dropped the knives. At that moment, I grabbed him, swept his legs out from under him, and we pinned \u2060him to the ground,” he added.<\/p>\n

Another part of the video shows the \u2060same man in a tracksuit lying on the ground immobilised by bystanders, while the two knives are seen lying nearby on a pedestrian crossing.<\/p>\n

“It is Allah who commanded me,” the man lying on the floor says.<\/p>\n

Nunez said the man had been detained by an off-duty police officer. “I pay tribute to him, it was a courageous act,” he added.<\/p>\n

The motive for the attack remains unknown, Nunez said, adding that police \u2060could not verify the identity of the attacker, whose declarations were “incoherent” while he was being arrested.<\/p>\n

The French national anti-terrorist prosecutor’s office said it was considering whether to open an investigation.<\/p>\n
