French pension reserve fund FRR has launched an index strategy developed with BNP Paribas that evaluates companies\u2019 ability to finance, implement and successfully complete their climate transition.<\/p>\n

The BNP Paribas\u00a0FRR Eurozone Advanced\u00a0Transition\u00a0Equity Index will\u00a0be included in\u00a0FRR\u2019s euro-area\u00a0equity portfolio, which\u00a0the fund said is in line with\u00a0the\u00a0Paris Agreement, according\u00a0to a press release. Notably, FRR has allocated \u20ac100M to the new index.<\/p>\n

FRR board member\u00a0Salwa Boussoukaya-Nasr\u00a0said in a press release that the fund\u00a0has\u00a0worked for more\u00a0than two decades\u00a0to integrate environmental\u00a0considerations into its\u00a0investment policy and\u00a0that the new\u00a0index marks a\u00a0further step toward\u00a0assessing\u00a0not only companies\u2019 current greenhouse-gas\u00a0emissions and environmental\u00a0impacts but also\u00a0their ability to\u00a0transform their business\u00a0models to meet\u00a0the\u00a0challenges of the\u00a0climate transition.<\/p>\n

Designed specifically for\u00a0FRR, the index\u00a0covers large- and\u00a0mid-cap companies\u00a0in the euro\u00a0area. It uses a\u00a0proprietary methodology\u00a0developed jointly by\u00a0FRR and BNP\u00a0Paribas to evaluate\u00a0companies\u2019 ability to\u00a0finance, implement and\u00a0successfully complete their\u00a0climate transition by\u00a0taking into account\u00a0both their current\u00a0position and future\u00a0trajectory.<\/p>\n

The methodology is based on four pillars:<\/p>\n

Greenhouse-gas emissions\u00a0intensity across Scopes\u00a01, 2 and\u00a03<\/p>\n

Implied temperature rise<\/p>\n

Share of\u00a0capital expenditures aligned\u00a0with the European\u00a0Union taxonomy,\u00a0known as Green\u00a0Capex<\/p>\n

ValueCo consensus indicator\u00a0that assesses credibility and quality\u00a0of companies\u2019\u00a0transition strategies.<\/p>\n

The index also\u00a0applies FRR\u2019s existing\u00a0responsible-investment\u00a0criteria, including exclusions, compliance with the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0Global Compact and\u00a0assessments of the\u00a0credibility of companies\u2019 transition pathways.<\/p>\n

In the release, Thibaut Heurtebize, head\u00a0of Sustainable\u00a0Structuring at BNP\u00a0Paribas, said developing\u00a0a meaningful climate\u00a0index requires moving\u00a0beyond approaches based\u00a0primarily on emissions\u00a0data.<\/p>\n

FRR is a\u00a0signatory to the\u00a0Principles for Responsible\u00a0Investment and a\u00a0member\u00a0of the Net-Zero Asset Owner\u00a0Alliance. The new\u00a0index will be\u00a0implemented across the\u00a0fund\u2019s Paris Agreement-aligned equity index\u00a0replication mandates and\u00a0will contribute to\u00a0its decarbonization targets\u00a0for the asset\u00a0class under its\u00a0Net-Zero Asset\u00a0Owner Alliance\u00a0commitments.<\/p>\n

The investment forms part of FRR\u2019s 2024-2028 sustainability strategy, which focuses on climate, biodiversity and social issues.
