The lawsuits concern products that contain benzoyl peroxide, an active ingredient in the treatment of acne.<\/p>\n
In the summer of 2026, claims multiplied online that several class action lawsuits were filed against skin care product line CeraVe, which belongs to French cosmetics corporation L’Or\u00e9al, because its products included a well-known carcinogen, endangering its users.\u00a0<\/p>\n
One July 20 post on Instagram said the lawsuits asserted that “a carcinogen” is “forming inside these products,” identifying the harmful chemical as benzoyl peroxide:<\/p>\n
Benzoyl peroxide breaks down into benzene<\/a>, a known carcinogen, if exposed to heat. The post further claimed (archived<\/a>):\u00a0<\/p>\n Benzene is a Group 1 human carcinogen, meaning it causes cancer in humans. There is no safe level of benzene exposure.<\/p>\n Yale University researchers lab tested CeraVe’s cleansers. CeraVe tested at 5 to 12 ppm of benzene. The FDA’s limit: 2 ppm. Up to 6x the federal threshold.<\/p>\n The claim spread across social media, including on Facebook<\/a>, X<\/a> and Reddit<\/a>, and Snopes readers emailed us and searched our website for more information.<\/p>\n In short, the story is true. Snopes identified six ongoing lawsuits against L’Or\u00e9al, CeraVe’s parent company, after an independent lab called Valisure \u2014 which was founded by former Yale students \u2014 identified high levels of benzene<\/a> in products that include benzoyl peroxide. This compound is an active ingredient that treats acne, according to CeraVe’s website<\/a> (archived<\/a>), which also confirms that its Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser and its Acne Foaming Cream Wash contain 4% and 10% benzoyl peroxide, respectively.<\/p>\n Though Valisure did not cite CeraVe or L’Or\u00e9al directly in its March 2024 statement<\/a>, it said benzoyl peroxide (BPO in the statement) degrades into benzene, a known carcinogen, at relatively low temperatures, including body temperature, per their testing:<\/p>\n Valisure’s tests found benzene at high levels when BPO products were incubated at 37\u00b0C (98.6\u00b0F – body temperature), 50\u00b0C (122\u00b0F – accepted pharmaceutical stability testing temperature) and 70\u00b0C (158\u00b0F – hot car temperature).<\/p>\n Shortly after Valisure published its results, several plaintiffs filed lawsuits, starting with a woman named Jennifer Snow<\/a>, who filed on March 8, 2024, in Hawaii. Another class action lawsuit was filed shortly thereafter, on March 15, 2024, by Holly Grossenbacher<\/a> in Louisiana. Ellen Painter and Robert Hightower<\/a> in Missouri followed suit on March 19, as did Lucinda O’Dea<\/a> in Illinois on April 5, Ciara Noakes<\/a> on April 11 and Latifah Abednego<\/a> in New York on May 24.<\/p>\n In November 2024, all plaintiffs requested that their lawsuits<\/a> be transferred to and consolidated in the federal district of Hawaii to expedite litigation. In response, L’Or\u00e9al asked that they be centralized in New York. A panel of judges on multidistrict litigation<\/a> denied the plaintiffs’ motion to centralize in Hawaii on Feb. 7, 2025<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n By May 2025, all six lawsuits were transferred to the Southern District of New York<\/a>. No decision had been made on the cases as of this writing.<\/p>\n
