{"id":61298,"date":"2026-08-04T13:10:08","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T13:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/61298\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T13:10:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T13:10:08","slug":"inventory-stockpiling-drives-19-revenue-surge-at-cma-cgm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/61298\/","title":{"rendered":"Inventory Stockpiling Drives 19% Revenue Surge at CMA CGM"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStrong volumes and higher <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/freight-rates\/\" id=\"auto-tag_freight-rates\" data-tag=\"freight-rates\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">freight rates<\/a> powered <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/cma-cgm\/\" id=\"auto-tag_cma-cgm\" data-tag=\"cma-cgm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CMA CGM<\/a> to nearly 20 percent revenue growth in the second quarter as businesses pulled forward orders to <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/container-ocean-freight-rates-22-month-high-trans-pacific-fuel-inventories-strait-hormuz-transits-iran-drewry-1239033382\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">stock up on inventory<\/a> and get ahead of additional fuel adjustments and surcharges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tTotal revenue at the ocean carrier amounted to $15.7 billion, up 19.2 percent compared with the second quarter. Net income increased by roughly 48 percent, jumping to an estimated $770 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBut revenue at the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/container-shipping\/\" id=\"auto-tag_container-shipping\" data-tag=\"container-shipping\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">container shipping<\/a> segment soared 22 percent to a shade under $10 billion, mainly reflecting an average revenue of $1,575 per 20-foot equivalent unit (TEU) transported. On an annual basis, the average freight rate per TEU escalated 15.1 percent year-on-year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAdditionally, EBITDA margins at the segment benefited from the high-rate environment, increasing to 22.7 percent in the second quarter versus 19.4 percent in the year-ago period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cUncertainties about whether supply chains will continue to work well against the backdrop of a conflict have pushed people to stock up preventively, and that\u2019s what we saw in the second quarter,\u201d chief financial officer Ramon Fernandez said last Tuesday in an earnings call. \u201cThose effects will probably continue in the third quarter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the second quarter of 2026, transported volumes reached 6.3 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), up 6 percent compared with the 2025 period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe numbers surpass global container volume growth seen in April and May, in which Container Trades Statistics counted a 4.6 percent increase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAlso aiding the <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/red-sea-houthi-attack-oil-tankers-asia-container-shipping-saudi-strait-hormuz-1239080643\/\" id=\"related_article_link_container-shipping\" data-tag=\"container-shipping\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">container shipping<\/a> giant was a significant bump in traffic on the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/trans-pacific-cargo-capacity-peak-container-shipping-season-ocean-carriers-seko-fuel-costs-1238985851\/\">trans-Pacific trade lane<\/a> in the three-month period, as more U.S. importers re-upped their buying habits from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cOver the past months there has been a <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/trade\/china-export-growth-june-2026-27-percent-gdp-economy-trade-1239067175\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">rebound of Chinese exports<\/a> to the U.S. compared to what was seen over the previous year,\u201d said Fernandez. \u201cThis window of opportunity of sorts has led companies to reconstitute their stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tChina\u2019s exports to the U.S. rose 13.8 percent from last June to $43.5 billion, following up a 35.4 acceleration in May to roughly $35 billion, the highest such annual growth since March 2021. Shipments bounced back from a low baseline in 2025, after the tariff dispute between the countries had intensified, briefly sinking volumes on the trans-Pacific eastbound route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFernandez said the environment was \u201cvery volatile and very complex,\u201d noting that an increase in inflation could hit consumer demand that could possibly end the stockpiling efforts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, American retailers\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/tag\/inventory\/\" id=\"auto-tag_inventory\" data-tag=\"inventory\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inventory<\/a>-to-sales ratio in May was the lowest since January 2023 at 1.25, reflecting the need for companies to continue replenishing goods. The pulling forward of <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/industry-news\/starboard-turns-cruise-logo-merchandise-into-a-memory-maker-1239066479\/\" id=\"related_article_link_inventory\" data-tag=\"inventory\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">inventory<\/a> effectively created an earlier than usual <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/port-of-long-beach-peak-shipping-season-obsolete-june-cargo-1239066248\/\">peak shipping season<\/a>, which traditionally is categorized as August to October.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tConcerns about a newer batch of U.S.-levied tariffs along with the Iran-war driven increase in fuel costs further led to the increased movement in the April-through-June period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLast week, <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/cma-cgm-freight-rates-container-shipping-strait-of-hormuz-iran-war-q1-earnings-1238983930\/\" id=\"related_article_link_cma-cgm\" data-tag=\"cma-cgm\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CMA CGM<\/a> announced an \u2060emergency \u200bfuel surcharge effective Aug. 1 following a \u200brenewed escalation of hostilities in the Strait of Hormuz in late July in which <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/strait-of-hormuz-oil-tanker-attacks-houthis-threat-red-sea-saudi-shipping-1239076103\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">multiple oil tankers<\/a> were attacked by Iranian forces.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe \u2060surcharge ranges from $65 to $165 per container depending on size, and \u200bwill be in place \u200buntil \u2060further notice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring the call, Fernandez indicated that CMA CGM still has eight of its vessels still trapped in the Persian Gulf due to the concerns over safety in the strait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cAgainst a backdrop of continued geopolitical instability, the Group delivered solid results in the second quarter of 2026, driven by the performance of our shipping activities, the growth of our terminals and air cargo businesses, and the complementary strengths of our logistics operations,\u201d said Rodolphe Saad\u00e9, chairman and CEO of CMA CGM Group, in a statement. \u201cThis performance reflects our strategy of expanding in key markets and investing in strategic assets. They once again demonstrate the strength of our model, our agility and our resilience, all in support of delivering reliable, high-quality service to our customers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDuring the quarter, the container shipping giant further sought to expand its logistics footprint with the $1.4 billion acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/sourcing-journal\/logistics\/cma-cgm-fedex-supply-chain-contract-logistics-unit-1-4-billion-acquisition-sale-3pl-1239049746\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">FedEx\u2019s contract logistics business<\/a>, giving the French company a greater stronghold in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn Monday, the ocean carrier withdrew a bid to buy a 49 percent stake in Rail Logistics Europe, which operates France\u2019s largest railway.
