With quantum threats expected to pose a greater risk to organizations in the near future, Luna 8 enables organizations to securely store, protect, and manage cryptographic keys with market-leading performance, scalability, and speed.

With findings from the 2026 Thales Data Threat Report revealing the rise of Harvest Now, Decrypt Later (HNDL) attacks, 59% of organizations are already prototyping and evaluating post-quantum cryptography (PQC) algorithms to prepare for the quantum era.

Globally, governments are also taking the initiative to ensure organizations are prepared to deal with such threats. In Singapore, the government has released guidance and self-assessment tools for organizations to measure their PQC readiness while other governments in the region are implementing similar plans.

For organizations, Luna 8 builds on the capabilities of Luna 7, the previous model that was released several years ago. While Lune 7 is also capable of dealing with some PQC, Luna 8 has newer features that make it available to support multiple environments in the AI and hybrid cloud era.

Specifically, the key advantages of the Luna 8 HSM include:

Quantum readiness: Luna 8 secures the cryptographic keys underpinning critical enterprise services such as PKI, certificate management, authentication, digital signing and identities; while providing a seamless path to post-quantum cryptography without disrupting existing investments.
Performance: With orders of magnitude faster cryptographic operations, Luna 8 delivers the performance needed for the most demanding applications.
Scalability: It scales effortlessly from enterprise deployments to hyperscale environments, supporting rapidly growing cryptographic workloads without compromise.
Future-proof: Its upgradeable architecture makes it easy to introduce new algorithms, standards, and capabilities, ensuring it remains secure, adaptable, and future-ready for years to come.
Portability: Seamless migration for existing customers as it uses the same ancillaries and interfaces without requiring changes to current applications.
Flexibility: Luna 8 is delivered on a unified hardware appliance designed to support a variety of cryptographic applications. Future releases will also support payShield 11K, extending the platform to payment HSMs that protect payment transactions, PINs and sensitive cryptographic keys used by banks and payment providers worldwide.

In a media briefing, Andy Zollo, Senior Vice President, Application & Data Security, Thales explained that while most organizations can run crypto algorithms on the existing Luna 7s, what’s going to happen is that the “increasing volume in the production environment could lead to them running out of horsepower.”

Put simply, while Luna 7 is capable, it could run out of steam at some point as compared to Luna 8 which has built in multi-tenancy and various other things.

“If you look at most HSM constructs, they are all designed to run one version of the firmware. But with Luna 8, you can actually run multiple versions of HSM firmware in the same device using containers and that will actually make the migration a lot simpler. For example, if existing folks who are using Luna 7, they don’t have the time to test the applications, but they want to move to this new HSM, we can just move the whole firmware to Luna 8 and then spin up other firmware in other containers all at the same time. That’s how we do the crypto agility part in Luna 8,” Zollo explained.

As the first next-generation HSM on the new Thales HSM platform, Luna 8 is available as a network appliance, providing quantum-safe, tamper-resistant security with scalable performance. Designed for the highest assurance requirements, Luna 8 is being independently assessed to meet some of the world’s most demanding security standards (including FIPS 140-3 Level 3 and EU Common Criteria).

“We have several beta customers now, and a few customers building into their budget cycle. The first units will ship in December and we have customers who want it. We’re literally having to pick who we can supply the first units to because there’s limited stock,” said Zollo.

Zollo also mentioned that all go to market and sales are done through the Thales partner ecosystem. While Thales does go out and talk to customers, create their demand, everything else is done through partners.

“We’ve got to do the consultancy and the crypto discovery and all those natural steps. Our job is to invent and build the best technology. Most of the partners can have that level of conversation. The installation takes very fast. We’re talking about less than hours to install it, get it up and running. The time-consuming part is actually the migration from the existing ones. Because typically, regular testing, we talk about weeks and months,” he added.

At the same time, Zollo also shared that Thales has seen a 25% cost of goods increase in the materials that are going into all of its appliances, but Thales will try to absurd it as much as they can.

As the first next-generation HSM on the new Thales HSM platform, Luna 8 is available as a network…

[13059
35455,33133,988,5719
post-63321","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-thales","tag-hardware","tag-quantum","tag-security","tag-thales
["GET
