{"id":64820,"date":"2026-08-13T18:30:11","date_gmt":"2026-08-13T18:30:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/64820\/"},"modified":"2026-08-13T18:30:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-13T18:30:11","slug":"what-can-skin-tell-us-about-how-we-age","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/64820\/","title":{"rendered":"What can skin tell us about how we age?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> L\u2019Or\u00e9al and NUS Medicine are putting skin, scalp and hair alongside systemic measures to test their place in precision geromedicine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loreal.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">L\u2019Or\u00e9al Groupe<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/longevityacademy.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity<\/a> are joining forces to investigate what skin, scalp and hair might reveal about biological aging, opening a joint laboratory at <a href=\"https:\/\/medicine.nus.edu.sg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">NUS Medicine<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/longevity.technology\/news\/singapore-steps-up-with-new-trial-center-for-healthy-longevity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Healthy Longevity Clinical Trial Centre<\/a> in Singapore as part of a multi-year research partnership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The collaboration brings L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s skin and hair research capabilities into NUS Medicine\u2019s clinical longevity studies, where different organ systems can be assessed within the same participants. The premise is deceptively simple: organs do not necessarily age at the same rate, so could the body\u2019s largest and most accessible organ provide useful information about aging elsewhere \u2013 or does skin keep biological time largely on its own?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The choice of location is not incidental. Singapore\u2019s population is aging quickly even by regional standards, and L\u2019Or\u00e9al positions the city-state as a serious longevity research hub rather than merely a market for antiaging products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Longevity.Technology: \u201cSkin deep\u201d has always been a rather dismissive phrase; geroscience may yet make it look scientifically shortsighted. Skin is our largest organ, extraordinarily accessible and obligingly visible \u2013 it can be sampled, imaged and measured repeatedly without much persuasion from the patient \u2013 yet it has rarely been incorporated into multi-organ aging research with anything like the rigor applied to the cardiovascular system, brain or metabolism. That makes this partnership a particularly savvy move from L\u2019Or\u00e9al. The beauty industry has spent more than a century becoming exceptionally good at disguising some of the outward evidence of aging; increasingly, however, it is grasping the fact that camouflage alone is unlikely to satisfy a generation interested in healthspan, biological age and interventions that address causes rather than simply consequences. The rather more interesting question is whether skin can become not just something we try to make look younger, but something that tells us how the rest of the body is aging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What makes the NUS collaboration scientifically useful is the decision to measure skin, scalp and hair in the same participants undergoing cardiovascular, metabolic, cognitive and musculoskeletal assessments \u2013 a within-person comparison that is considerably more informative than trying to stitch together findings from unrelated dermatology and geroscience cohorts. Skin has, in effect, been invited to the multi-organ aging party; now we find out whether it has been keeping time with everyone else. If skin aging correlates meaningfully with systemic aging, an organ sitting conveniently on the outside of the body could offer a relatively inexpensive, repeatable window onto processes that currently require blood draws, imaging or specialist equipment. If it does not, that answer matters too \u2013 skin may simply follow its own biological trajectory and deserve intervention on those terms. Either way, accessibility should not be mistaken for validity, nor a biomarker for a therapeutic target; the real value here will come from testing whether what we can see on the surface genuinely tells us anything about what is happening beneath it. \u201cSkin deep\u201d, it turns out, may need rather more qualification than we thought.<\/p>\n<p> Putting skin in the game <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The joint laboratory co-locates L\u2019Or\u00e9al\u2019s skin, scalp and hair evaluation capabilities with the clinical research infrastructure of the NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity. Skin assessment was already part of the Academy\u2019s trial protocols; researchers can now characterize it alongside cardiovascular, metabolic, cognitive and musculoskeletal measures collected under the same protocols.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSkin has been an underutilised window into the biology of aging,\u201d said Professor Andrea Maier, Oon Chiew Seng Professor in Medicine, Healthy Ageing and Dementia Research at NUS Medicine and Founder and Director of the NUS Academy for Healthy Longevity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That window contains considerable molecular activity. If they do, the implications for longitudinal monitoring are attractive: repeated access to skin is considerably simpler than repeated imaging or more invasive sampling.<\/p>\n<p> From cosmetics to prevention <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For L\u2019Or\u00e9al, the collaboration also places longevity science within a substantial existing research operation; the Groupe says it invests \u20ac1.3 billion annually in research and innovation, supported by 4,000 scientists across 22 research centers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf signs in the skin turn out to be meaningful indicators about how the whole body is aging, that changes what a skin measurement really tells us,\u201d said Dr Angeline Tay, Head of Advanced Research at L\u2019Or\u00e9al Research &amp; Innovation in Singapore. \u201cInstead of just reflecting appearance, it could become an early signal of what\u2019s happening inside the body.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Magali Moreau, AVP Scientific Direction at L\u2019Or\u00e9al Research &amp; Innovation, frames the partnership in similarly strategic terms: \u201cSingapore has become a critical global hub for longevity research in one of the world\u2019s fastest-ageing regions, making this partnership with NUS Medicine a strategic milestone for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019Or\u00e9al expects findings to feed into its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loreal.com\/en\/articles\/science-and-technology\/longevity-is-in-the-skin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Longevity Integrative Science<\/a> framework and, over time, potentially inform evidence-backed interventions for healthier skin, scalp and hair. The direction is notable: from mitigating visible manifestations of aging toward understanding the biology producing them, with prevention becoming part of the commercial vocabulary as well as the scientific one.<\/p>\n<p> More than a mirror <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interesting work begins with validation.
