{"id":6519,"date":"2026-04-15T18:31:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T18:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/6519\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T18:31:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T18:31:08","slug":"iranian-national-convicted-in-france-for-inciting-terrorism-returns-to-iran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/6519\/","title":{"rendered":"Iranian national convicted in France for inciting terrorism returns to Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 An Iranian national convicted in France on charges of inciting terrorism went back to Iran on Wednesday, one week after two French nationals detained in Tehran <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/french-detainees-cecile-kohler-jacques-paris-iran-2b68d4368e00d8e47c8ec0837c8c4fe8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">returned to France<\/a>, according to Iranian state television. <\/p>\n<p>Mahdieh Esfandiari was sentenced by a Paris criminal court in February to one year in prison with an additional three-year suspended sentence, along with a permanent ban from French territory, over comments she made about the Hamas-led Oct. 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. She appealed the decision. <\/p>\n<p>She had initially been placed under house arrest, but the measure was lifted last week by French authorities shortly after it was made public that French detainees C\u00e9cile Kohler and Jacques Paris had left Iran, her lawyer Nabil Boudi told The Associated Press. <\/p>\n<p>Kohler and Paris spent more than three years in Tehran\u2019s Evin prison, where many political prisoners and dissidents are held, over spying charges which Paris said were unfounded. (AP Photo\/Aurelien Morissard, File)\"  width=\"599\" height=\"399\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776277868_234_.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Esfandiari made a link between her case and Iran\u2019s decision to allow Kohler and Paris to return home last week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the very same day that they were released \u2026 they (French authorities) released me,\u201d Esfandiari said. \u201cThey called and said that this (house arrest) restriction has been lifted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Iran\u2019s state-run agency IRNA reported that Iran had reached an agreement with France for the release of both French citizens in exchange for Iranian national Mahdieh Esfandiari.<\/p>\n<p>However, French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s office denied there was any such agreement about a prisoner swap.
