{"id":65731,"date":"2026-08-16T02:55:02","date_gmt":"2026-08-16T02:55:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/65731\/"},"modified":"2026-08-16T02:55:02","modified_gmt":"2026-08-16T02:55:02","slug":"frances-top-court-blocks-under-15-social-media-ban-citing-constitutional-freedoms-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/65731\/","title":{"rendered":"France\u2019s top court blocks under-15 social media ban, citing constitutional freedoms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 A top court in France on Friday struck down a law <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/countries-social-media-ban-restriction-australia-europe-meta-instagram-70ec39c0753b8d7599de6da419916d32\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">banning children<\/a> under 15 from <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/france-social-media-ban-macron-94abd981ccea85138af314cfb1ea62cf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">using social media<\/a>, saying it infringes on fundamental freedoms. <\/p>\n<p>The Constitutional Council ruled that provisions in the ban \u201cdisproportionately infringe freedom of expression and communication\u201d and haven\u2019t provided legal guarantees to ensure those rights, according to a press release summarizing the decision. <\/p>\n<p>France last month became the first country in the European Union to pass a blanket ban on the platforms amid rising worldwide concerns about the harmful effects of digital content on kids.<\/p>\n<p>Both chambers of the Parliament had voted in favor of the measure, which also banned the use of mobile phones in high schools. <\/p>\n<p>The legislation was one of the final major measures adopted under <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/emmanuel-macron\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">French President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s<\/a> presidency before he leaves office next year.
