Stellantis is considering the closure and sale of its Brampton Assembly Plant in Ontario, Canada, according to workers union Unifor. <\/p>\n
In a statement, the union said: “On August 12, 2026, the company [Stellantis] informed the union of its intent to open discussions with another firm about the potential sale of the plant.” <\/p>\n
The union said the potential shutdown highlights the effects of the auto tariffs imposed by the US President Donald Trump administration. <\/p>\n
It also said it has spent the past 18 months repeatedly calling for steps to prevent this type of risk to Canada’s auto industry and related jobs. <\/p>\n
Stellantis has yet to issue Unifor a formal written notice of closure. <\/p>\n
Under the union’s collective agreement, Stellantis must give at least one year’s notice before any closure or sale. <\/p>\n
More than 2,200 members of Unifor Local 1285 at Brampton Assembly have stayed on layoff since the plant was idled in December 2023 for retooling to produce the Jeep Compass electric SUV. <\/p>\n
Stellantis put that retooling work on temporary hold in February 2025, then announced<\/a> in October 2025 that Jeep Compass production would instead move to the US, leaving the Brampton plant idle indefinitely. <\/p>\n Unifor argues that shifting Compass production breaches both the collective agreement and pledges Stellantis has made tied to substantial federal and provincial government funding. <\/p>\n While the union has not taken part directly in talks between Stellantis and government officials launched over the company’s breach of commitment, it said that process has so far failed to produce a satisfactory outcome. <\/p>\n Unifor added that throughout the retooling and the plant’s subsequent idling, Stellantis had continued to signal it planned to reopen the facility and honour its obligations to union members. <\/p>\n “The shift to pursue a potential sale is a dire development. The closure of the Stellantis plant would cause a serious reduction in Canada’s automotive footprint impacting thousands of jobs across the region. There is no replacement for the high-paid, union jobs developed under auto sector collective agreements built-up over 80 years,” Unifor said in a statement. <\/p>\n Just Auto has contacted Stellantis for a comment. <\/p>\n
