FCA US LLC announced the voluntary recall Aug. 17, involving an estimated 848,511 vehicles in the U.S. The recall is identified by FCA as 78D.<\/p>\n
Why was the recall initiated?<\/p>\n
According to Stellantis, radio software in the affected vehicles may prevent the rearview camera image from appearing on the vehicle’s media screen while the driver is reversing.<\/p>\n
Failure to display the rearview image can reduce the driver’s view behind the vehicle and increase the risk of a collision.<\/p>\n
The problem may occur without advance warning, according to the company. Stellantis said the rearview camera itself is not defective; the recall addresses the radio software responsible for displaying the camera image.<\/p>\n
The company said it is unaware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue.<\/p>\n

Affected customers will get an over-the-air radio software update, which is expected to become available in September. According to the company, a prompt will appear on the vehicle’s media screen when the update is available, and drivers are encouraged to accept it and follow the on-screen instructions.<\/p>\n
Customers who successfully install the over-the-air update will not need to visit a dealership. The company said if the update cannot be completed over the air, a dealer can install it free of charge.<\/p>\n
Stellantis said customers can continue driving their vehicles before the update is installed but should remain aware of their surroundings and use their rearview and side mirrors when reversing.<\/p>\n
Recall notices are expected to be mailed to affected customers beginning in September with additional information and instructions.<\/p>\n
