Trading volume reached nearly 56 million shares, roughly three times the recent average liquidity, with unfilled buy orders at the ceiling price exceeding 5.5 million units.

Reuters reported that France’s BNP Paribas and South Korea’s KB Kookmin Bank are conducting separate negotiations to purchase at least 15% of Techcombank’s shares. The deal value could reach up to $2 billion. Techcombank is reportedly set to choose one of these two institutions as its strategic partner. All parties involved declined to comment on the matter.

A rare limit-up session

According to trading data on the Ho Chi Minh Stock Exchange (HOSE), since its listing on June 4, 2018 through the end of the August 25 session, TCB has gone through 2,057 trading sessions but has closed at the ceiling price in only 15 of them, equivalent to a rate of 7.3 sessions per 1,000 sessions. Counting only from the beginning of 2023 through the session before today, the stock has hit the ceiling just twice—on April 10, 2025 and April 8, 2026. The April 10, 2025 session occurred in the context of nearly the entire market hitting limit-up after the U.S. announced a delay in reciprocal tariffs.

Techcombank’s frequency of limit-up sessions is significantly lower than many other banks. Statistics from 2023 to date show LPB hit the ceiling 14 times, STB 12 times, EIB 11 times, and VPB 10 times. Only two other banks have a similarly low number of limit-up sessions as Techcombank: CTG of VietinBank and ACB of Asia Commercial Bank.

Valuation and management expectations

With nearly 7.1 billion shares outstanding, Techcombank’s market capitalization after the limit-up session reached VND 237 trillion, equivalent to $9.1 billion. If the sale of a 15% stake at $2 billion is completed, the bank’s valuation would stand at VND 348 trillion, equivalent to approximately $13.3 billion, 47% higher than the current market capitalization.

Techcombank’s key financial metrics as of the end of Q2 2026:

MetricValueShareholders’ equityVND 189 trillionBook value per shareVND 26,671Total assetsOver VND 1.27 quadrillionCustomer loans outstandingVND 847.336 trillionCustomer depositsVND 662.448 trillion

Note: Figures from Techcombank’s Q2 2026 financial report.

At the price of VND 33,450, TCB is trading at 1.25 times book value. Before the limit-up session, the stock had two consecutive declining sessions and closed on August 25 at VND 31,300. On July 27, the share price fell to VND 28,250, the lowest level in a year. From that trough, the stock has recovered 18.4%.

At the annual general shareholders’ meeting in April 2026, Mr. Ho Hung Anh, Chairman of Techcombank, shared that the bank is targeting a market capitalization of $20 billion and that reaching this milestone is only a matter of time. With the current market capitalization of approximately $9.1 billion, Techcombank is still more than halfway from this goal.

Regarding business results, Techcombank achieved VND 9.670 trillion in pre-tax profit in Q2 2026, bringing the cumulative six-month figure to VND 18.540 trillion, up 22.5% compared to the same period in 2025.

Impact on the broader market

Techcombank ranked second among stocks with the greatest impact on the VN-Index in the August 26 session, contributing more than 3 points. The benchmark index of the Ho Chi Minh City exchange closed at 1,821 points, up 30 points from the reference level, reaching its highest level in a month and a half. The VN30-Index rose 33.86 points, or 1.75%, to 1,970.01 points.

Vingroup (VIC) continued to dominate the index, contributing more than 16 points as it reversed from a decline to a gain of more than 4%, closing at VND 230,000. Market breadth improved with more than 170 gainers and nearly 130 decliners on the Ho Chi Minh City exchange. The large-cap basket showed stronger divergence with 24 gainers and only 2 decliners.

By sector, industrial park real estate and rubber stocks were bright spots as BCM hit the ceiling after news of establishing a new subsidiary with capital of more than VND 1.455 trillion to expand its industrial park, while GVR and PHR both rose more than 1%. The oil and gas group also brightened with a series of gainers, though gains did not exceed 4%. Within the banking group, most large-cap stocks such as HDB, MBB, VCB, VPB, and CTG rose 1-3%, while some mid- and small-cap stocks like VBB, MSB, and VAB closed below the reference level.

Liquidity on the Ho Chi Minh City exchange in this session fell short of VND 20 trillion, a sharp decline from the previous session. VIC and TCB took the top two spots in the liquidity rankings, reaching VND 2.235 trillion and VND 1.270 trillion respectively. Foreign investors returned to net selling after a three-session streak of net buying, with purchases of nearly VND 2.150 trillion and sales of approximately VND 2.200 trillion.

According to the analysis team at Tien Phong Securities, optimism has returned for the majority of investors. The index is in an uptrend with a solid technical foundation, so if the market experiences a mild correction, investors can increase their positions at better prices rather than chasing rallies during strong up sessions.

Techcombank (TCB) shares closed the August 26 session at VND 33,450, the ceiling price and also the highest…

[12875
12883,43037,43041,42760,43038,42761,43040,43039
post-70237","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-bnp-paribas","tag-bnp-paribas","tag-ho-hung-anh","tag-hose","tag-kb-kookmin-bank","tag-tcb","tag-techcombank","tag-vingroup","tag-vn-index
["GET
