{"id":7189,"date":"2026-04-18T12:20:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:20:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/7189\/"},"modified":"2026-04-18T12:20:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-18T12:20:09","slug":"son-of-85-year-old-french-widow-home-after-16-days-in-us-immigration-custody-says-she-needs-rest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/7189\/","title":{"rendered":"Son of 85-year-old French widow home after 16 days in US immigration custody says she needs rest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>ORVAULT, France (AP) \u2014 The son of an 85-year-old French widow who married an American military veteran but was later detained for overstaying her visa says she now needs rest after the ordeal.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to reporters Friday after Marie-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Ross returned to France, Herv\u00e9 Goix, said the family&#8217;s \u201cabsolute priority\u201d is to protect her.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To preserve her health and her rest, and for her to be able to rebuild herself,\u201d Goix told a press conference alongside his two siblings in the town of Orvault, in western France.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are particularly relieved today to see our mother again, to have her back,&#8221; he said. \u201cShe has necessarily gone through a difficult ordeal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross returned to France after a harrowing 16 days spent in <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-immigration-86-french-woman-military-9eacc896aa409a12aca811975888fcd4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">federal immigration custody<\/a>, French Foreign Minister Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot said on Friday. Without elaborating, Barrot said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement methods were \u201cnot in line\u201d with French standards and \u201cnot acceptable to us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross entered the U.S. last June after marrying a retired U.S. soldier who had been stationed in her home country in the 1960s, court records show. But after her husband died of natural causes in January, a dispute arose over his estate. Ross\u2019 stepson \u2014 a U.S. federal employee \u2014 allegedly intervened to have her taken <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ice-immigration-86-french-woman-military-9eacc896aa409a12aca811975888fcd4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">into immigration custody<\/a>, an Alabama judge found.<\/p>\n<p>Federal immigration agents detained Ross in Alabama on April 1 after she overstayed her 90-day visa, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. She was then held at a detention facility in Louisiana as French officials expressed concern about her well-being.<\/p>\n<p>Goix, who told The Associated Press that she had been in the process of applying for a green card when she was taken into custody, added during the press conference that \u201cthe essential thing is that she is truly safe, that she regains her comfort, that she is surrounded by her children and grandchildren.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The mayor of Orvault, S\u00e9bastien Arrou\u00ebt, told French media he spoke with Ross and said \u201cshe is delighted, she is happy, she is relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPut yourselves in her place, in a country she knows a little bit, it all happened to her so suddenly,\u201d he said. \u201cWe don\u2019t realize the psychological violence.
