A recovery in sales has been elusive, leaving consumer stocks broadly depressed, along with sentiment among shoppers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Stimulus efforts in China have fallen short of sparking a revival at home or abroad for a sector struggling to shake off the effects of the Iran war.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cInterestingly, when consumer confidence is at lows, such as most recently, consumer groups tended to outperform over the next 12 months,\u201d said JPMorgan Chase strategists led by Mislav Matejka.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">They flag that luxury tends be among the sectors faring best in such setups. \u201cBig picture, consumer cyclicals remain in the eye of the storm, with profit warnings and cautious guidance, but they could see better performance ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The European luxury sector has outstripped the broader market by 9 per cent and 12 per cent on average after a trough in the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment Index, the strategists said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">They are overweight on the sector on a global basis, a view based on potential wealth effects ahead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">They see Korea becoming a growth engine with retail sales so strong that this market now represents larger exposure than the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-6 border-b border-gray-200 pb-4 font-poppins text-4xs font-medium tracking-10 text-gray-600\">SEE ALSO<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"block h-full w-full\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesstimes.com.sg\/singapore\/s3b-money-laundering-case-15-carat-diamond-yayoi-kusama-chanel-items-auction?ref=article-see-also\" data-discover=\"true\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"relative z-10 h-full w-full object-cover\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/c488eb00d743b8b0df933b0fd2ba96ec0d80f72696d54da67779b4ec7ccb9095.webp\" alt=\"This 15.02-carat fancy yellow diamond ring has one of the highest estimates in the upcoming auction, at S$200,000 to S$300,000.\" width=\"1944\" height=\"1296\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Meanwhile, Chinese demand should start improving as the macroeconomic environment settles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Earnings growth has been subdued for about two years, especially when compared to the broader market. Yet, this trend is finally showing signs that the worst is over, and profit estimates now point to a pickup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIf someone doesn\u2019t have any luxury exposure, it can be an idea to start accumulating,\u201d said Christina Carlsten, a senior fund manager at Banque Piguet Galland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cIt\u2019s an anti-consensus trade. So it\u2019s for long-term investors and might take some time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recovery likely progressive, rather than linear<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">That said, any recovery could be fragile. Attention has recently returned to China, after weaker import data and fears of a slowdown in purchasing in July and August given increased taxation of offshore wealth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">\u201cThe industry data we track shows that on a regional-weighted average basis, global luxury data points to a three percentage point slowdown in the third quarter 2026 to date versus the second quarter, and this is still not yet including September which carries the toughest comparison,\u201d said Bank of America (BofA) analysts led by Ashley Wallace.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">The BofA team added that the slowdown was most evident in the US, Japan, Korea and Macau, which were the strongest markets in the second quarter, while EU tourism is holding up better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">They have buy ratings on stocks including LVMH, Herm\u00e8s International and Richemont, adding that the recovery in luxury demand will be progressive, rather than linear.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Watches preferred over handbags<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Valuation-wise, the sector is back near its 10-year average, trading at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of about 25.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A closer look shows some major divergences. LVMH, for example, now trades at a 25 per cent discount to its peers, the top of a 10-year range, making it among the cheapest stocks in the sector.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">That warrants a selective approach. Investors have moved on from rewarding diversification and now prefer recovery stories and specific trends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">For instance, the widespread pessimism among households is also reflected in how consumers still buying luxury items have shown a preference for watches and necklaces over handbags and clothing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">A BofA basket that tracks hard luxury stocks has outperformed its soft-luxury equivalent by more than 40 percentage points since early April, reflecting more robust earnings trends for jewelry names during the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">As a consequence, Pandora and Cartier owner Richemont are among the best luxury performers in 2026, while fashion behemoths LVMH and Herm\u00e8s have trailed the rest of the industry, down 30 per cent and 27 per cent, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">Jewellery \u201cremains one of luxury\u2019s most attractive categories, combining superior growth, lower luxury penetration, greater pricing power and broader price depth than most personal luxury goods categories\u201d, Bernstein analysts Luca Solca and Maria Meita wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-pre-wrap break-words mb-4 md:mb-6\" data-testid=\"article-paragraph-component\">That supports the case for Richemont, and investors continue to underestimate the extent to which the company is \u201cstructurally advantaged relative to the broader luxury sector\u201d, they said.
