{"id":7316,"date":"2026-04-19T02:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T02:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/7316\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T02:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T02:53:13","slug":"doj-declines-to-assist-france-in-probe-of-elon-musks-x","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/7316\/","title":{"rendered":"DOJ declines to assist France in probe of Elon Musk&#8217;s X"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Justice Department (DOJ) has informed French authorities that it will not contribute to an investigation into billionaire Elon Musk\u2019s social media platform X, according to a report from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/justice-department-rebuffs-french-on-x-probe-musk-interview-2b8eb080\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Journal reported that the DOJ\u2019s Office of International Affairs accused authorities of attempting to use the criminal legal system in France to regulate a \u201cpublic square for the free expression of ideas and opinions in a manner contrary to the First Amendment of the United States Constitution,\u201d citing a two-page letter dated Friday.<\/p>\n<p>The letter comes just over two months after the X offices in France <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5720244-elon-musks-x-offices-raided-in-paris\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5720244-elon-musks-x-offices-raided-in-paris\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">were raided<\/a> as part of a probe launched last January into allegations of bias in its content algorithm.<\/p>\n<p>X slammed the raid in a February statement as an \u201cabusive act of law enforcement theater,\u201d framing it as politically motivated rather than \u201crooted in the fair and impartial administration of justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Paris Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office is plainly attempting to exert pressure on X\u2019s senior management in the United States by targeting our French entity and employees, who are not the focus of this investigation,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n<p>The French case <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5397052-france-investigation-elon-musk-x\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has expanded<\/a> in recent months, following reports of antisemitic posts on the platform, including Holocaust denial. The spread of child sexual abuse material and nonconsensual deepfake content is also under investigation for potential charges, according to the Journal.<\/p>\n<p>The letter reportedly stated that France had asked for U.S. assistance three times this year, which \u201cconstitute an effort to entangle the United States in a politically charged criminal proceeding aimed at wrongfully regulating through prosecution the business activities of a social media platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department and X did not immediately respond to The Hill\u2019s requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>X is also currently <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5706412-eu-elon-musk-x-platform-ai-chatbot\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">under investigation<\/a> by the European Union to determine whether the company \u201cproperly assessed and mitigated risks\u201d when it deployed its AI chatbot Grok.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Musk\u2019s platform <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5749310-elon-musk-x-appeals-eu-fine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">appealed<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/technology\/5635100-eu-fine-elon-musk-x-platform-blue-checkmark-transparency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$140 million fine<\/a> imposed by the EU for violating the Digital Services Act, setting the stage for a landmark legal battle that could shape how online platforms are regulated across Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media Inc.
