{"id":76369,"date":"2026-09-09T01:03:28","date_gmt":"2026-09-09T01:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/76369\/"},"modified":"2026-09-09T01:03:28","modified_gmt":"2026-09-09T01:03:28","slug":"popes-france-visit-to-draw-over-1m-people-with-stops-in-paris-lourdes-and-metz","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/france\/76369\/","title":{"rendered":"Pope&#8217;s France visit to draw over 1M people, with stops in Paris, Lourdes and Metz"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>PARIS (AP) \u2014 <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/pope-leo-xiv\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pope Leo XIV\u2019<\/a> s forthcoming trip to France, which marks the first official papal state visit to the country in 18 years, is expected to attract more than 1 million people, according to the Bishops\u2019 Conference of France (CEF).<\/p>\n<p>The four-day visit, which starts on Sept. 25, will include popemobile rides, an open-air Mass in central Paris and a stop in Lourdes, one of Catholicism\u2019s most important pilgrimage sites.<\/p>\n<p>The trip is \u201cimportant for the country hosting him, but more broadly &#8230; the pope will also have very important things to say to the entire world,\u201d Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, president of the bishops\u2019 conference, said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-visit-france-clergy-abuse-a633186bd81f411119cf2060c7c40a65\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The visit<\/a> will begin in Paris, where Leo will meet with President Emmanuel Macron at the \u00c9lys\u00e9e Palace, before delivering a speech at the headquarters of UNESCO, the U.N.&#8217;s cultural agency.<\/p>\n<p>Leo will then travel by popemobile along a 2.5-kilometer (1.6-mile) route through central Paris as church bells ring across the city. Organizers say as many as 150,000 people could gather to welcome him.<\/p>\n<p>He will later celebrate vespers at <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/notre-dame-cathedral\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Notre Dame Cathedral<\/a> and end the day with a prayer vigil with young people at France\u2019s national stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Crowds will gather in the French capital the following day for an open-air Mass at Place de la Concorde. At least 500,000 people are expected along the Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es and near the Arc de Triomphe, an area Leo will cross in the popemobile, organizers said. The Mass will be shown on 42 giant screens along the avenue.<\/p>\n<p>That same day, Leo is to meet with migrants at the Maison Bakhita, a social support and integration center, before meeting with recently baptized Catholics.<\/p>\n<p>Pilgrimage in Lourdes and European message in Metz<\/p>\n<p>The pope will travel to Lourdes, in the foothills of the Pyrenees in southwestern France, where he will meet seven <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-france-child-abuse-sexual-abuse-by-clergy-religion-ab5da1ff10f905b1c338a6f3427a1c66\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">survivors of sexual abuse<\/a> who were assaulted as children or adults. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the Church, like society as a whole, has become aware of the terrible reality of sexual abuse,\u201d Pierre-Antoine Bozo, spokesperson for the bishops\u2019 conference, said. \u201cIt now recognizes that reality and is trying to provide as much support as possible to survivors of abuse, to help them, if possible, move beyond the trauma they have experienced.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leo will conclude his time in Lourdes by taking part in one of the sanctuary\u2019s signature rites, the rosary and torchlight procession.<\/p>\n<p>He will then move on to Metz, near France\u2019s borders with Luxembourg, Belgium and Germany, for a visit intended to give the trip a European and international dimension, according to the CEF.<\/p>\n<p>Leo is expected to deliver a speech on Europe\u2019s roots, peace and unity at a conference center named for Robert Schuman, a French statesman regarded as one of the Founding Fathers of European integration. Schuman, a Catholic, was declared \u201cvenerable\u201d in 2021, a step in the Catholic Church\u2019s sainthood process.<\/p>\n<p>There will be a popemobile ride through the streets of Metz to the city\u2019s Gothic cathedral \u2014 known as \u201cthe Good Lord\u2019s Lantern\u201d \u2014 which has one of the largest expanses of stained glass in Europe, creating colorful displays of light inside the building.<\/p>\n<p>    <a class=\"AnchorLink\" id=\"html-embed-module-a00000\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\n    Sign up for Morning Wire:<br \/>\n    Our flagship newsletter breaks down the biggest headlines of the day.\n  <\/p>\n<p>Fundraising campaign for visit<\/p>\n<p>Sylvain Guillebaud, deputy secretary-general of the CEF, said the pope\u2019s visit is expected to cost the Catholic Church 27 million euros ($31 million). A major fundraising campaign was launched at the beginning of the summer, and 5.5 million euros ($6.4 million) has been raised so far, he said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the French state will provide support by deploying security forces and other public services to ease visitors\u2019 experience.<\/p>\n<p>The trip will be Leo\u2019s fourth foreign visit of the year. He made a day trip to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/pope-leo-xiv-monaco-visit-prince-albert-a1127845562357d13d5b6994444db256\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Monaco<\/a> in March, visited <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-africa-pope-angola-cameroon-algeria-equatorial-guinea-1420c2425d627d4f3affc67f2a7c4813\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">four African nations<\/a> in April and traveled to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-pope-spain-sagrada-familia-migration-9b52641c1f3c8966171f0e41f747bdc7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a> and the Canary Islands in June.<\/p>\n<p>The Vatican also confirmed this week that Leo will make his first trip to <a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/vatican-pope-leo-peru-argentina-uruguay-latin-701f20187f230f504f15a2b2fb52a89b\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Latin America<\/a> as pope in November, visiting Uruguay, Argentina and Peru.
