PARIS, April 24 (Reuters) – France \u2060wound \u2060up a meeting \u2060of G7 environment ministers on Friday \u200bdefending its “pragmatic” decision to keep climate change \u200coff the agenda to \u200cavoid a clash with the \u2060U.S.<\/p>\n

U.S. President \u2060Donald Trump has dismissed climate change as a \u200bhoax despite scientific evidence, and has withdrawn his country from several international climate bodies.<\/p>\n

Keeping \u200bit off the formal agenda of the Paris-hosted \u2060meeting \u2060was “a more pragmatic approach” \u2060that \u200bavoided “the risk of certain partners walking from the \u200bnegotiating table,” \u2060French Environment Minister Monique Barbut told reporters.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Nobody wanted a confrontation and everyone is relieved this G7 meeting happened in \u2060good conditions. Everybody was willing to find a positive \u2060outcome and work on widely shared issues.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

The talks covered issues ranging from biodiversity to water resources and ocean protection, added Barbut, whose country is the current chair of the G7 bloc of wealthy nations.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I am happy with the \u2060outcome. I asked to look at the points of convergence,” she said, citing progress on nature protection and boosting \u200bfunding for biodiversity.<\/p>\n
