\n\tFrance wasn\u2019t originally in the mix for season 4 of Mike White<\/a>\u2018s hit anthology series \u201cThe White Lotus<\/a>,\u201d but it won the shoot in the most \u201cWhite Lotus\u201d way imaginable, with a perfectly \u201cstereotypical\u201d French waiter encounter in Cannes.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSomething happened, actually here in Cannes,\u201d producer David Bernad said during a session at Cannes Series Festival, which White attended in 2021. \u201cWe went to dinner and we had a really specific experience with a waiter and a ma\u00eetre d\u2019, and it was the stereotype. It was a very funny moment. And I think that it suddenly unlocked what the show is and the dynamics of the show.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe epiphany was immediate. \u201cWe literally canceled all the other places we were going. We were like, okay, we\u2019re shooting here,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat moment also matched the idea that White already had for this season, which was \u201cabout the arts and what it is to be an artist\u201d \u2014 themes the city that hosts the world\u2019s most prestigious film festival amplifies.<\/p>\n

\n\tBernad revealed that he had experienced the festival first-hand in his late 20s when he presented a film he had produced. \u201cI\u2019ll never forget coming here. It was the first time as a producer I felt people respected me,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s nowhere grander than the film festival for artists, it\u2019s the biggest dream on Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile the plot details remains tightly under wraps, Bernard teased that season 4 centers on the loneliness and pain of being an artist \u2014 and \u201chow fame can be corrosive and can dictate your choices in life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cWho are the people that can grab the world\u2019s attention, who are the plus-one in a relationship, who\u2019s the person who has that power, what are the things that satisfy us as people? Is it the love of an intimate partner? Is it the love of strangers? Is it the attention of the world?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt\u2019s White\u2019s \u201cmost personal season,\u201d he added, \u201cand it\u2019s the funniest season as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSeason 4 has been filming with a French crew at the Chateau de la Messardi\u00e8re in Saint-Tropez for roughly two weeks, and will soon head to the Martinez Hotel in Cannes during the May film festival, as well as Monaco and Paris, where it will shoot interiors during the summer .<\/p>\n

\n\tNews broke Friday that Helena Bonham Carter had departed the production<\/a> as her role was being recast. During the panel, Bernad didn\u2019t address Carter\u2019s exit but spoke about French cast members Vincent Cassel and Nadia Tereszkiewicz. \u201cThe most exciting part so far has been working with them. It\u2019s funny because I don\u2019t speak French, but I\u2019m sitting on set and those scenes are in French. And they\u2019re so expressive, and they\u2019re such incredible artists,\u201d he said. The French cast also includes Laura Smet, who attended the funeral of her late mother, the actor Nathalie Baye<\/a>, Friday in Paris.<\/p>\n
