Car parks in the centre of Totnes will close as a programme of improvement works begins this month – with the promise that the project will be finished in good time for the busy Christmas shopping period.
South Hams Council is carrying out the work at the Old Market car park and the two Heathway car parks off Leechwell Lane.
All three will be fully resurfaced with fresh lines as part of routine maintenance.
Old Market car park will close from October 8 to 14 while Heathway car park next to the Grove School will close from October 13 to 15. The Heathway permit holders’ car park opposite will be closed from October 8 to October 16 to act as a compound area during the works, and will be the last car park to be resurfaced through this project.
Cllr Victor Abbott (Lib Dem, Ivybridge East), who is the council’s executive member for community services, said: “This is are the latest step in our wider project to refurbish and modernise some of our assets across the district, including our public toilets, bins, benches and car parks.
“We are investing in our car parks to ensure they are in good condition for our residents and visitors. The works are being done now to ensure work is complete long before the busy Christmas period.”
He said other car parks in the town would have the capacity to cater for demand while the works are carried out.
“We are fully committed to supporting our communities in any way we can,” he said. “The resurfacing of a car park may not seem like much on its own, but when looking across the entire South Hams, they add up to make a huge difference.”
Totnes Town Centre and Business Permits will be valid for use in all other Totnes car parks while the works are carried out.
