CHURCH brings the experiences of Black immigrants in Britain to the stage through a story of identity, faith and belonging. Its greatest strength lies in the emotional commitment of its performers and the vibrant sense of community created through live music.

The production opens with an immediate sense of conflict. Rather than gradually introducing its central concerns, it places the audience directly within the emotional pressures facing its characters in the early 1960s. The intensity of the opening performance establishes a compelling atmosphere, while moments of more naturalistic acting give the story a recognisable connection to everyday life. These shifts between heightened emotion and familiar human behaviour help make the characters’ experiences accessible.

Music is another significant strength. Singers Jason Nicholson-Porter and Marcia Walder-Thomas deliver powerful, expressive vocals that bring warmth and energy to the performance. The live band works closely with the cast, creating a lively atmosphere reminiscent of a community celebration or church gathering. Rather than functioning as a conventional musical in which songs advance the plot, CHURCH uses music to express collective identity, religious faith and the shared spirit of its community.

The narrative itself remains straightforward, following a central conflict that makes the production’s themes easy to understand. This simplicity allows the audience to focus on the characters’ circumstances and the cultural world surrounding them. There is, however, room for greater dramatic development.

More substantial changes in character relationships, or further turns in the central conflict, could give the story additional depth and momentum. Similarly, some aspects of the historical and religious context are presented with an assumption of shared understanding.

Ultimately, CHURCH offers an engaging celebration of community, supported by committed performances, memorable singing and an energetic live band. While its dramatic structure could be developed further, the sincerity of its storytelling and the atmosphere created on stage remain its most appealing qualities.
