Original article: Trump castiga a Alemania por cuestionar su relato sobre Irán: retira 5 mil soldados
In a dramatic escalation of international tensions, Donald Trump has chosen to penalize Germany for questioning his narrative regarding the ongoing conflict with Iran by withdrawing 5,000 American troops from the European nation.
This latest move by the White House further widens the rift with Europe stemming from the military conflict that Trump initiated alongside Israel on February 28.
The decision is a direct response to harsh remarks by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who stated that Iran is “humiliating” the United States and proving to be “clearly stronger than previously thought.”
“An entire nation is being humiliated by the Iranian leadership, especially by the so-called ‘Revolutionary Guard,’” he asserted last week during a speech at the Carolus-Magnus-Gymnasium in Marsberg.
Merz criticized Trump for failing to consult Germany before initiating military action against the Islamic nation, noting he had expressed his skepticism about the situation twice before.
“If I had known it would go on like this for 5 or 6 weeks and get worse, I would have told you even more emphatically,” he added.
German Chancellor: “Iranians Are Clearly Stronger Than Previously Thought”
Merz expressed his feelings of “disappointment” regarding the joint actions of Washington and Tel Aviv, arguing that the European Union should focus on finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict.
“The Iranians are clearly stronger than previously thought, and the Americans apparently don’t have a truly convincing strategy in these negotiations,” he stated, emphasizing that this “complicated” situation has direct repercussions on Germany’s economic performance and must end as soon as possible.
Trump was quick to retaliate, taking aim at the German Chancellor and insisting that “he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.”
“If Iran had nuclear weapons, the whole world would be in danger,” exclaimed the President, who then urged Merz to focus on the issues facing his “shattered country” and his “total ineffectiveness” in mediating the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
“Devastating” Economic Consequences for German Towns
The troop withdrawal is only the tip of the iceberg. According to revelations from The New York Times, the deployment of American medium-range missiles on German soil is also at risk, a strategic agreement made in 2024 between Joe Biden and then-Chancellor Olaf Scholz, deemed crucial for European security.
Merz himself admitted that it is now “practically impossible” for the United States to supply those systems.
German political analyst Iván Kuzmín warned RT that the impact will not be merely geopolitical but also economic. Small towns like Ramstein-Miesenbach, which rely on the American contingent, would face “devastating consequences.” Mayor Ralf Hechler estimates that between military personnel and their families, the exit will affect around 10,000 to 12,000 individuals.
“For Ramstein, that would be fatal,” he asserted.
Beyond the numbers, what truly shakes Europe is the political message. Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic described the situation as “a point of no return.”
“Everything is crumbling from a single statement. It is evident that interests no longer align,” he declared.
In Kuzmín’s view, Trump’s decision could accelerate the remilitarization of Germany, though he doubted the German Congress would approve the necessary spending.
