ALLERTON, The Bronx (WABC) — Abdul Titumir could not save his friend, 39-year-old Angel Johnson. She was one of two women, who police say were killed when the 81-year-old driver of a Mercedes Benz plowed into people at a crosswalk in the Bronx, before crashing into several drivers.
Authorities say Johnson and another woman, 57-year-old Robin Kennedy were among those crossing Allerton Avenue at Holland Avenue around 2 p.m. Friday as the driver bolted through a red light.
According to authorities, Johnson and Kennedy died at the hospital with extensive trauma to their bodies. Seven other people were also taken to the hospital, including the 81-year-old driver of the Mercedes.
Titumir says he’s worked at the store on the corner for 35 years, meeting friendly customers like Johnson.
“She always walk around the neighborhood, say hello to everybody all the time. So friendly. And she always talking to me because passing through,” he said.
The sound of the Mercedes taking off is what drew onlookers.
“I heard the obviously the car is noise switching gears. So I know someone who was speeding and it’s unusual to hear that around here, so I automatically run out. I catch the last part when the lady was flying up and the other two ladies flew and everyone was, like, holding their heads in shock,” Titimur added.
According to those who knew Kennedy, she lived in the neighborhood with her sister and their mom.
No arrests have been made.
