GOLDBECK, Holcim, and Paebbl have successfully poured the first industrial floor slab in Germany using carbon-sequestering ready-mix concrete at a commercial scale. The 420-square-meter slab, installed at an e-commerce logistics hub in Southern Germany for a multinational technology firm, substituted 15% of conventional cement with Paebbl Rebond. This substitution lowered the concrete’s embedded carbon by 13% relative to the standard CEM II/B-M mix. The final formulation achieved 200 kg CO2 equivalent per cubic meter, outperforming the 228 kg CO2 equivalent reference benchmark, while satisfying the full C30/37 strength requirements without altering construction schedules or standard application techniques.

This initiative shows that carbon-storing concrete has moved beyond experimental batches or lab trials. By uniting a general contractor, a building materials and solutions supplier, and a materials innovator, the three entities demonstrated that decarbonized concrete can traverse a typical industrial supply chain—from the batching facility to the construction site—without necessitating modifications to existing procedures. The entire process, from initial idea to completed pour, spanned under six months.

The partnership combined three specialized strengths. Holcim’s Offenburg facility manufactured the ready-mix concrete, incorporating Paebbl Rebond as a partial cement substitute within a conventional CEM II/B-M mix design. GOLDBECK oversaw the construction and pouring, employing standard methods and verifying that the fresh concrete’s characteristics—such as workability, setting duration, and finishing properties—matched the control mix. Paebbl provided the carbon-storing supplementary cementitious material (SCM), manufactured at its Rotterdam plant using a method that speeds up natural mineralization, converting captured CO2 into a stable mineral form.
