Here’s what the players and coaches have to say about the final matchday of the 2025/26 season.
Grischa Prömel: “We set our sights high; we knew it was a final. Then we foolishly fell behind. The red card was a real blow to our gameplan. But overall, it’s been an outstanding season. It’s amazing what we’ve built up this season. Every player in the squad can be proud of themselves. I’m grateful to have played in a team like this. Everyone gave their all. It was a great performance this season, which was overshadowed by the result today. But pride prevails because we turned a team on the brink of relegation into a team playing in European competition next season. Saying goodbye isn’t easy for me because I’ve grown fond of many of the lads. These are beautiful moments that will stay with me.”
Ozan Kabak: “It was a poor performance from us. But we’re happy that we’ve had such a good season. We’ll be playing in Europe next year, so I’m proud of us. It’s frustrating that we didn’t make it into the Champions League but today wasn’t good enough either. I’m looking forward to the Europa League.”
Oliver Baumann: “It wasn’t good today. But you have to look at the season as a whole – and that was outstanding. All in all, the game was too open today; we didn’t close down the spaces tightly enough. Gladbach took full advantage of that. We’ve developed very well as a team. We can be very proud – even if it hurts a lot today. We’ve racked up the most wins in the club’s history.”
Andreas Schicker: “We didn’t miss out on the Champions League; we gained a spot in the Europa League. We finished fifth and, with 61 points, had the second-best season in TSG’s history. Pride completely outweighs everything. We want to continue on our successful path next season, building on continuity while also making a few selective changes, implementing clear ideas and recruiting profiles for what we want to adjust.”
Christian Ilzer: “Today’s result is a bitter pill to swallow. We were expecting a different game and a different result, but Gladbach are very deserving winners. This result has sent us a clear message. It may be the end of the season, but it’s not the end of our journey. We’ll draw the right conclusions and take them into the new season. But I’d like to put this game behind us now. We can be very pleased with a very good season. We’ve built a very successful team that has thrilled many people. I’m very grateful to have been part of this story. The journey continues.”
Eugen Polanski (Head Coach of Borussia Mönchengladbach): “I’d like to congratulate TSG on a magnificent season. It was an almost perfect performance from us today. The ‘almost’ refers to Haris Tabaković, as he had to be substituted due to injury and I hope it doesn’t jeopardise his chance of making it to the World Cup. A lot went our way today, but we’ve worked hard for it. I’m delighted with how the season has ended.”
