Mercedes-AMG is entering an entirely new era. The new all-electric GT 4-Door Coupe uses radical axial-flux motor technology and delivers a peak output of an incredible 1,153 hp. Thanks to an extreme 800V architecture, the performance EV can add 286 miles of range in just ten minutes, taking on established rivals both on the racetrack and at the charging station.

AMG is breaking with old conventions. The performance brand is introducing the completely newly developed Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupe. The sport sedan is based on the dedicated AMG.EA high-performance architecture. Two all-electric versions will be available when orders open in a few days: the top GT 63 4Matic+ model and the GT 55 4Matic+ variant. Pricing for the new EVs is expected to be in line with comparable predecessor models with combustion engines.

At its core is a true world first for series production. Three innovative axial-flux motors drive the coupe. Two of these extremely slim disc-shaped motors are mounted on the rear axle, while a third motor on the front axle acts as a booster. An integrated disconnect unit rapidly decouples the front drive during steady cruising to minimize drag losses. In the top GT 63 model, this trio delivers a brutal peak output of 860 kW. That equals a substantial 1,153 hp. The related GT 55 still produces 600 kW, or 805 hp.

The acceleration figures are striking. From a standstill, the GT 63 launches to 62 mph in just 2.1 seconds. It can hit 125 mph in just 6.4 seconds. With the optional Driver Package, the top speed is increased to 186 mph. The motors on the rear axle spin at up to 13,000 rpm, while the front unit can exceed 15,000 rpm.

A completely new high-performance battery provides the necessary endurance for long-distance driving. The technology is based directly on insights from Formula 1 and the AMG One hypercar. A total of 2,660 cylindrical cells are housed in a lightweight, laser-welded aluminum enclosure that is fully integrated into the vehicle’s crash structure. AMG uses a new NCMA cell chemistry with a silicon-containing anode, offering a high energy density of more than 298 Wh/kg at the cell level.

The technological highlight is the integrated direct oil cooling system. A special electrically non-conductive cooling oil flows around each individual cylindrical cell separately. This allows the system to achieve exceptionally high cooling performance of at least 20 kW. It keeps the energy storage system within the optimal temperature range even during extreme track use or sustained full-throttle driving. In the future, this battery concept is expected to enable real WLTP ranges of well over 435 miles. According to the manufacturer, combined energy consumption is a low 3.0 to 3.5 miles per kWh.

AMG has achieved a real milestone in terms of charging. At compatible ultra-fast chargers, the system handles charging currents of more than 800 amps. This enables a peak charging output of more than 600 kW. A conventional charging session from 10 to 80% therefore takes just eleven minutes. For a brief stop, the car can add enough energy for more than 286 miles of range (according to the WLTP cycle) in just 10 minutes. Automatic switching to 400V infrastructure and global compatibility with five different charging standards, such as CCS2 and NACS, provide maximum flexibility.

Despite its all-electric powertrain, fans do not have to give up the brand’s typical emotional appeal. The new AMGForce S+ drive program simulates a highly authentic V8 sound. To achieve this, the sound of a real AMG GT R was meticulously digitized using 16 microphones. The system even creates noticeable interruptions in power delivery during simulated gear shifts.

The AMG Active Ride Control air suspension with semi-active hydraulic roll stabilization and standard 6-degree rear-axle steering is designed to provide the appropriate driving dynamics. Three rotary controls in the center console, known as the AMG Race Engineer, allow throttle response, cornering behavior, and traction to be individually calibrated across nine levels. Active aerodynamic elements in the form of Venturi panels in the underbody and a deployable rear diffuser also press the performance car onto the road at high speeds.
