According to a report from Euronews, the construction of the F126 class frigate, the largest frigate class globally, is underway in Germany. The project, however, is significantly behind its original schedule, with a potential delay of four years from an initial deployment target in the North Atlantic.

The F126 design represents a shift from classic frigates, functioning as a flexible multi-purpose platform centered on a modular system. This system allows the ship to be reconfigured for various missions, including submarine hunting or drone operations. The vessel is engineered for extended missions, capable of remaining on station for up to two years with rotating crews. With a displacement of approximately 10,000 tonnes, it offers substantial space for additional systems and helicopters, prioritizing persistent presence and surveillance over high-intensity combat roles.

Concurrently, the German government is advancing an alternative, the Meko A-200 multi-purpose frigate. Initial funding for this vessel has been approved, with plans to procure at least four ships and an option for more. This model is viewed as a readily available bridge solution, yet the F126 project is expected to continue in parallel due to the scale of prior investment.

Technical and organizational challenges, particularly concerning information technology systems, have hampered the F126 initiative. After the original contractor, Damen, was removed from project management in autumn 2025, focus shifted to the German shipyard group NVL. With internal resolution of data transmission issues, Rheinmetall is now positioned to accelerate construction. Under optimal conditions, experts estimate a launch for the first ship could occur in 2031, though they also express concerns about rising costs.

International Naval Developments and Aerospace Stalemate

Beyond Germany, the current President of the United States has announced plans for a new generation of battleships, described as larger and more heavily armed than previous U.S. Navy vessels. The first ship of this proposed class is slated for construction in the early 2030s. These ships would be equipped with guns, missiles, and potential future systems like laser weapons, and could carry nuclear-armed cruise missiles.

In a separate European defense project, Germany, France, and Spain have collaborated for nearly a decade on the Future Combat Air System, a planned replacement for existing fighter aircraft from 2040. Progress has been slow, attributed to disagreements between the involved manufacturers, with one party insisting on a clear leadership role and a concentration of economic benefits. A German official recently raised the possibility of withdrawing from the program, citing differing national security requirements, while French leadership defended the joint project. A final decision on its future remains pending.
