At least 20 people are thought to have sustained injuries in a horrific tram crash today (June 2). The Berlin Fire Department confirmed that a tram derailed on Wartenberger Straße.

Fire officials informed the Berliner Morgenpost that the collision occurred at 9:29am on a bend shortly before the Arnimstraße station. For reasons that remain unclear, the tram collided with an overhead power line pole, ripping apart one side of the carriage.

In a post on social media platform X, Berlin police confirmed that the M5 tram had smashed into two poles. Officers stated that recovery and restoration efforts could span several days.

BVG boss Henrik Falk from Berlin’s transport operator reached the crash site shortly after 11 a.m. to assess the devastation personally, reports the Express.

He commented: “We are deeply saddened by the images we have seen here. Our thoughts are with the injured and our passengers.

“The cause of the accident still needs to be clarified. Whether technical or human error or a medical emergency triggered the accident, we cannot say at the moment.”

Among the 20 people injured, 17 suffered minor wounds while three were reported as severely injured, a spokesperson confirmed.

Rescue teams continue working at the location, with 51 staff members currently deployed.

Tram operations on routes M5 and M17 remain halted until further notice and are not running between Gehrenseestraße and Falkenberg. Alternative bus transport is being organised.
