The success of BMW’s new all-electric iX3 is reflected in the more than 50,000 orders placed by European customers within just six months, according to President and CEO of BMW Group Plant Debrecen Hans-Peter Kemser, speaking at an international media event at the Hungarian facility on Tuesday.
Kemser said the Debrecen-built iX3 serves as the foundation of BMW’s new Neue Klasse vehicle architecture, developed exclusively for electric vehicles. The model is the first in a new generation of products, with around 40 additional models expected to be launched globally on the same platform in the coming years.
The executive described the Debrecen facility as a showcase for the future of automotive manufacturing. Built around BMW’s iFACTORY concept, the plant combines digitalization, efficiency and responsible resource management. Production currently operates in two shifts with an output of around 30 vehicles per hour, although growing demand could require the introduction of additional shifts.
‘New plant, new product, new platform, new battery, new technology,’ Kemser said, highlighting the facility’s unique position within BMW’s global manufacturing network.
Opened in autumn 2025, the Debrecen plant is the newest and most advanced production site in BMW Group’s worldwide network. Beyond vehicle manufacturing, company representatives said the facility is helping to create a knowledge-based, innovation-driven economic ecosystem in eastern Hungary.
Built on more than 400 hectares, the site includes a press shop, body shop, paint shop, assembly plant and battery module assembly operations. BMW has invested more than €2 billion in the project and plans to manufacture exclusively electric vehicles at the facility. Annual production capacity is expected to reach approximately 150,000 vehicles.
During the media event, journalists toured key production areas, including the highly automated press and body shops, where nearly 1,000 robots operate within a fully digital manufacturing system. The paint shop runs entirely on electricity generated from renewable sources, helping to significantly reduce carbon emissions.
Company officials also emphasized the plant’s sustainability credentials. The facility operates without fossil fuels, relying solely on electricity. Around one-quarter of its energy demand is supplied by a 56-hectare solar power installation, while advanced energy recovery systems, photovoltaic technology and heat storage solutions further improve efficiency.
The Debrecen factory is also the first of five BMW plants worldwide to assemble sixth-generation high-voltage batteries on-site. The company said this ‘local for local’ approach shortens supply chains, strengthens integration with vehicle production and improves supply security.
Kemser stressed that employee commitment and expertise remain essential to the project’s success. BMW has therefore invested heavily in training and long-term partnerships. One example is its close cooperation with the University of Debrecen, which operates an external department at the factory. Through dual education programmes and practice-oriented training, students can gain real industrial experience while creating long-term career opportunities within the company.
Environmental considerations also extend beyond production. Fruit trees have been planted across the factory grounds, with employees expected to participate in future harvests. Traditional yurts have been installed as relaxation spaces, while meadows surrounding the site support biodiversity. In some green areas, sheep are used instead of lawnmowers to maintain vegetation, reflecting BMW’s broader sustainability ambitions for the Debrecen facility.
