One of our favorite things about the BMW M2 has always been its rear-wheel drive power delivery. Then again, we’ve never had the option for anything else. That’ll soon change for the 2027 M2, as BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system will be available for the first time in the model’s history.

The system is rear biased, and all torque is sent to those wider 285 tires during normal driving until power is needed at the skinnier 275 fronts. The transfer case contains an electronically-controlled multi-plate clutch to moderate the split, working with an Active M Differential with application-tuned traction and stability control. The transfer case also utilizes its own control unit, and it’s able to adapt to wheel slip as it occurs and without DSC management, expediting the process.

2027 BMW M2 Offers xDrive AWD For the First Time

Drivers can dive into the M Setup menu to configure the system to a certain point, including a mode that deactivates DSC and routes all power to the rear wheels. Same as the standard rear-drive version, the M2’s turbocharged 3.0-liter will produce 473 horsepower; however, xDrive forces that inline-six to pair with an eight-speed automatic, the “traditional” six-speed manual reserved for the “traditional” M2. The AWD advantage is a 3.3-second 0-60 time, 0.3 seconds quicker than a similarly equipped rear-drive M2.

One more update for 2027, the M2 can now come finished in Borusan Turkish Blue for the first time, a selection from the BMW Individual palette. That’s the color you see in the press photos; not quite as dramatic as the purple and gold M2 CS we tested at this year’s Roebling roundup, but still a high contrast vibe suited for such a sporty coupe.

The 2027 BMW M2 xDrive will begin production at the BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico this August, and is said to have a base price of $74,950, destination added. Pricing for next model year’s rear-drive M2 is yet to be announced, though we’re sure it’s a fair bit less than that, considering the 2026 M2 starts at $70,350 with either transmission.
